Skype has release a version of their free, voice over IP software for Pocket PCs, allowing any Pocket PC user with Wi-Fi access the ability to place and receive voice calls for free. Read the story.
Skype has about 500,000 users, making it the most popular VOIP application out there. The voice quality on the PC version is excellent — much better than a standard phone connection.
With the addition of Skype-Out (a pre-paid service), you can even use Skype to dial regular phone numbers, not just other Skype users.
Could you dump your mobile phone and just use your Pocket PC and wireless connection? Unless you are nearly always near a Wi-Fi connection, probably not. But it is an interesting development, especially as Wi-Fi access becomes more readily available in metropolitan areas.
Damn, that’s great!
I’ll have fun with this. 🙂
Though I wish Skype caught on more, this would be a sweet replacement for my cellphone if I bought the extra service to call regular phone numbers. 🙂 Maybe not though, since wifi isn’t everywhere and isn’t always free. 🙁
I think in the future, once some profit is generated from their desktop software and re-invested back into the company, Skype will announce a deal with 01 or more cellphone makers hard-wired with Skype’s p2p telephony technology. This would mark one of the coolest innovations in recent memory – mobile hardware linked directly to the Internet using P2P, built for mainstream and even business use.
Another possible use – Skype P2P communication for internal business networks, creating a P2P network consisting of existing business machines instead of using the public Skype network.
