recently, i’ve been having this problem with direct IM transfer speeds. at first everything was fine and my transfer speeds were very fast(i use a cable modem), but now, not so much. now when i send a file using direct connection, it starts off fast then just suddenly slows down and there are continuous pauses in the transfer, which is very annoying. i use a router, so i was thinking that maybe this is the cause, but my cousin is behind a router as well and his transfers are always smooth and fast. any suggestions on what i should do?
I used to have the same problem with my cable modem, and i think it has to do if your transferring with a dial-up user because they cant recieve stuff as fast as you can.
A direct connection is a connection between you and your buddy directly, not passing through the AOL servers. Therefore, yes, if the other person has a slower connection, yours will be slow, as well, regardless if you have cable internet or not.
Here are the 3 main things I usually find that result in slow direct connections:
1. P2P file sharing (it is using your download/upload bandwidth)
2. Wireless connection through router
3. The other person having a slow connection
