ughh… Makes me upset that someone would hack my ID to cause me such frustration.
I heard the only way people can hack into a computer is if I have accepted a file from someone. Is this true.?
February 25, 2005 at 4:26 pm #115466OreoMemberThere are many reasons. Please search the site…there are many possibilities, you will find your answer more quickly by using search.

There are a lot of possible causes, and it is also the same for the hacking of your Yahoo! ID account. Maybe you have heard of the issue about retrieving someone’s password through your OWN email address, although I think that this DOESN’T work.
February 27, 2005 at 9:03 am #115468SubStreamMemberEssentially anyone you have been in voice in a PM with could have hacked or helped to hack you. All a person needs to infect you with a trojan is your IP and that becomes readily available upon activation of voice in a PM. I avoid all void PM’s and do not accept files from anyone. I advise you to do the same for now on. Also make sure ur system is clean and if you can’t be sure it is then reformat. Make sure your password contains uppcase and lowercase letters as well as numbers and symbols. Some people may info crack your account using the information you listed such as your birthday, zip code, country, and secret answer. Make your country outside of the continent in which you live, and you will surely then be able to make any zip code combination you would like.
Example: Country Turky Zip Code: any25combination
Write all account information down and keep it in a safe place. Do not share personal information with anyone. Free anti virus and firewalls include VCatch and ZoneAlarm among my favorite free services. Hope this helped
March 1, 2005 at 1:13 am #115469Country_SweetnessMemberThanks everyone for their response. Next time I will be more aware what not to do. I have been wanting to contact yahoo to see if they will close that account. I can not find the phone number or fax to contact them. Any suggestions.??
March 1, 2005 at 10:13 am #115471-bAbY_meX-ParticipantWell, you may use the form in their help page… But I must tell you, though, that getting a response from them or having your problem fixed has low chances.

You first must have downloaded the trojan, wether it be from a person sending a file. Or by going to a website w/ an internet explorer auto-download/run exploit(which are readily available)
Simply having an IP address will not do much good for the average yahoo hacker…
One of, if not the leading cause of people having their id’s hacked/stolen, is fake logins. (I do recognize that Magic which is a trojan also ranks very highly)
Simply put, some one put a link in their profile to a seperate page, with a spoofed login.
After putting in your information, the spoofed site will e-mail your account and password to whoever was specified.
If you keep up with your virus definitions, you shouldnt have a problem with trojans, If you are using a good anti virus product, they will pick up the trojan before it has a chance to run.
Although, there are several ways of bypassing such checks, most of the people ‘hacking’ or stealing ID’s are simply script kiddies, and do not retain the skills or technical savvy to do it.

Info cracking does pose a threat, but not a real viable one unless the person that took your ID knows you well enough to get all of your information, such as birthdate, zip code and secret question.
After 12 attempts i believe, the account is locked. So unless the person knew you, or your information was not that hard to obtain, I doubt it was an info crack.

I certainly agree with you there, you should always have a backup of all your account information for anything you do on your computer. In most cases it will help re-gain access to an account you have lost, just by simply dialing the Tech Support Number.
Quickly in conclusion, do not accept files from anyone that you do not 100% trust. Do not give out your information, do not have any personal information in your yahoo profile(such as where you are how old you are, etc.) Download an anti-virus and firewall solution. Do not login your yahoo! id, anywhere besides a yahoo.com(photos.yahoo.com, my.yahoo.com, mail.yahoo.com etc.) address. And most imperative, keep up to date with all your windows/antivirus/firewall/messenger updates, They are available for a reason…
