MemberHi!
Yep, it’s there. and also at Tucows…among others. Anyone here tried it?

KeymasterLooks pretty slick. How long has it been around? I don’t recall seeing it before.

MemberHi Jeff!
Well, thanks! It’s been around 2-3 years now, but until recently we’ve not had the resources to make much in the way of noise, and as you probably know, without re$ource$ it’s hard to be heard over the noise of the other guys that have more…! But we’ve got a pretty good user base now (installed servers) and also a pretty healthy following on our public network (different subset of users, somehow, tho…) so things are looking up.
You’ll be hearing a lot more about us soon. By the way, if you DO check out the client, feel free to add me and say “Hi!” – would be nice to have a word from time to time…if you have time, that is – i know how busy something like this can keep you!
Take care…

KeymasterI downloaded and installed their Global Instant Messenger (GIM). I setup a new account, but for whatever reason, it won’t let me login properly. Are there known problems using it with XP’s firewall? Seems odd, since NONE of the other instant messengers do.

MemberGIM is in the process of being re-worked, but it should do okay for you…
I’d suggest checking out Sonork first – it’s a bit more straightforward and is pretty bullet-proof (and it’s more my side of the house)…I can maybe help you get your GIM working, or can find someone who can, much more easily online. Most likely it’s some config issue, but generally the logon should be no prob (I just checked and server’s up).
If I can help, I’ll do what I can, though. Did you get the ID made? When you tried to sign in did you use the password?
March 18, 2003 at 5:43 pm #97627Jeff Hester
KeymasterI created the account “BigBlueBall” and yes, I used the password. I also tried to retrieve my password via email, (in case I someone fat-fingered something), but when I try that, I always get a “no response from server” message.
Also, the “welcome to GIM” email that I got was addressed from ClearChannel Entertainment (the big radio conglomerate). Is Sonork owned by ClearChannel? Oh, and the welcome email? It was complete blank.
Looks like there are a number of bugs yet to be worked out. I recognize that it’s beta, but it feels more like an alpha version.
As for Sonork, how do I go about trying that? Are their public Sonork networks that I can join?
March 18, 2003 at 6:49 pm #97635SonorkGuy
MemberNope, we’re not related to Clearchannel – they are an early customer of GIM, and the email is automated — and will likely be changed to a more generic version soon.
About Sonork, we’ve had a permanent public server open for quite a while. We don’t advertise it much as it was originally intended to be a demo/test, but we keep it up for users to access free (and to avoid the bodily harm that would come from some quarters should we ever take it down). ;o)
You can download the Sonork client from here:
https://gtv.com/dw/sonork-client-installer.exe -or- from the GTV website downloads section.
When you install Sonork, just accept the defaults – it will create an account for you, then you can log on relatively simply. I think you’ll like Sonork.
As for fat-fingering with GIM, well…it’s possible. When I can talk to you more naturally, I can try to help find out where it’s going wrong, and in the meantime I’ll ask some people about possible XP issues. It actually works better it seems, but like I said, it’s being reworked and it will be a much better product VERY soon.
thanks for your patience…!!

MemberInteresting little client. Interface is simple to use. I haven’t been to any of the chat rooms yet. Is this a text-only based chat and are these rooms admin or non admin based?
I like how there is an option to hide IP addresses to the public

MemberHi – if you’d like, add me to ur user list – i can show you around if you’d like.
At the moment, it’s text-based, but it can do a lot of little “nice” things that make it quite convenient to use. Conference rooms are either admined by the person who creates it, or the few permanent ones there are admined by those assigned. They are not all that busy, as most of the users there either create their own private rooms (we have several groups who hang out there (programmers, education-related groups, etc.), or prefer to communicate 1-1 with the people they know.
you can check out the tracker system for something that may be of interest… enjoy!

MemberWhy shouldnt this be considered as ‘BETA’ software? It has more holes than swiss cheese.

Blah, I couldn’t find a “edit post” button 😮
Anyway, rustedtight, you must be talking about the GIM. It has a few things to be worked out, but it is indeed a “beta.”
Sonork IM on the other hand, is flawless as far as I know. It comes loaded with a bag of goodies like message encryption & file compression with sending files to other users … 😉
I would put my money on Sonork as being as solid as a rock, no cheeze to be found 😎

I was suggesting that it isn’t even ready for beta… that it seemed more like alpha software, which usually isn’t released to the public for testing.

It looks like this:

I went ahead and deleted your other post. 😉

Memberwell, GIM *is* beta and i think it’s labelled as such on the links. as far as the wisdom in making it available, you could have a point, but then there are reasons – good or bad – for it, one being the volume of requests we got for it in any form. i’m not suggesting that i think it’s the best ideer, tho, either… ;o) – and besides, i’m running an OS that’s 2 generations old that many people still consider as “beta”. hehe
Be that as it may, it will soon be in MUCH better shape. If you want, I’ll let you know when it is ready for civilized use.
Sonork, as i mentioned at the beginning, *IS* in good shape, though… sorry for whatever confusion, but GIM and Sonork are two completely different things at the moment, with Sonork being by far the older brother…and more responsible one. ;o)
