ParticipantA few days ago I downloaded the Windows Live Beta, and didn’t like it, so I removed it with Add/Remove programs. However, the sound on normal MSN Messenger now doesn’t work, for example when someone starts a conversation I don’t here the sound. Also, there is no sound when I am nudged. I don’t know how to fix it – all the sound options say that sound is on.
Thanks.

MemberHi there and welcome to BigBlueBall!
Before I offer a fix, let me get into why the problem occured: A previous, non-released (leaked) build was discovered and because so many sites revealed it to be a special thing, many people downloaded and installed it. This leaked build was not ready for public release, it still contained a number of large bugs and one of those small bugs is the deletion of MSN Messenger sounds, replacing them with Windows Live Messenger sounds (that were never in that install package but were supposed to be for public release).
This is why I always tell people to not installed leaked software, unreleased software and beta software.
Now, the fix:
The thing with the leaked build was that it removed the registry references to the old sounds, it did not delete them – they still exist on your hard drive, Messenger just doesn’t know where to look for them. So let’s tell her.
Do the following at your own risk, neither I nor BigBlueBall are responsible for anything that may happen as a result of following my advice
As this involves the Registry, you should usually back up the registry. If you do not know how to do that, I don’t suggest you follow this advice.
Alternately, if you still wish to follow my advice, I have attached a file that can be saved to your computer, renamed to .reg and ran to do the registry portion of this fix.
Start -> Run -> type “regedit.exe” and press enter.
And do the following:
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesApps and create a key named “MSNMSGR”Set the default to “MSN Messenger”
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsMSNMSGR_Buzz
Set the default to “Nudge”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsMSNMSGR_ContactOnline
Set the default to “Contact Online”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsMSNMSGR_NewAlert
Set the default to “New Alert”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsMSNMSGR_NewMail
Set the default to “New Mail”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsMSNMSGR_NewMessage
Set the default to “New Message”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsMSNMSGR_NewSMSMessage
Set the default to “New Mobile Message”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsMSNMSGR_PhoneRing
Set the default to “Voice Call”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsMSNMSGR_PhoneRingOutgoing
Set the default to “Outgoing Phone Ring”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsEventLabelsMSNMSGR_VoiceIMFinished
Set the default to “Voice Clip Finished”In my opinion the above are already created, as the in this case, the installer has not removed any specifics, merely the reference to the sounds, which will be covered below.
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesAppsMSNMSGR and create a key named “MSNMSGR_Buzz”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesAppsMSNMSGR and create a key named “MSNMSGR_ContactOnline”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesAppsMSNMSGR and create a key named “MSNMSGR_NewAlert”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesAppsMSNMSGR and create a key named “MSNMSGR_NewMail”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesAppsMSNMSGR and create a key named “MSNMSGR_NewMessage”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesAppsMSNMSGR and create a key named “MSNMSGR_NewSMSMessage”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesAppsMSNMSGR and create a key named “MSNMSGR_PhoneRing”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesAppsMSNMSGR and create a key named “MSNMSGR_PhoneRingOutgoing”Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERAppEventsSchemesAppsMSNMSGR and create a key named “MSNMSGR_VoiceIMFinished”This adds back all the sound references, but you still need to set them accordingly using the Windows Sounds Properties.
Start -> Run -> type “mmsys.cpl” and press enter.
Click on “Sounds”
Scroll down to “MSN Messenger”
And setup the sounds appropriately.
In my opinion this is too a long winded process…so I suggest you run my .reg instead, although neither I nor BigBlueBall can be held responsible for any damage caused as a result of following my advice.
Right click the attached file below and choose save as.
Save it to your computer and rename it from msnmsgr_soundfix.txt to msnmsgr_soundfix.reg.
After doing that, setup the sounds accordingly by opening the Windows Sound Properties as explained above.

MemberI realise double posting is wrong, but it is necessary in this case.
I apologise for the length of my post above, and highly suggest you ignore the majority of it and only read the last part starting from opening up the Windows Sound Properties, as in my opinion the long winded process of applying the fix manually is not worth your trouble.
I have applied this fix to many computers and provided it to many users, none of them have had problems.
Still, to cover my ass and BigBlueBall’s I have included a disclaimer. This is not to scare you away from using the fix, because I assure you it works, but just to insure we cannot be help responsible for the odd problem that may result.

ParticipantThose instructions seem to be aimed at Windows 98/me. I’m on XP and the “mmys.cpl” doesn’t work on XP. Thanks though, what would replace that step?

ParticipantI’m confused as to how to assign each category a sound. When I try to set a sound for Nudge for example, it opens a folder called Media, with sounds such as Chime, Chord and Ding. Can you explain how to find the Messenger sounds simpler? I’m not an expert with computers, and probably just don’t understand your instructions. Sorry to be a problem like this.:( Thanks.

MemberNo problem at all.
My apologies for the late reply, been having network issues.
here are the usual locations:
Nudge > C:Program FilesMSN Messengernudge.wav
Contact Online > C:Program FilesMSN Messengeronline.wav
New Alert > C:Program FilesMSN Messengernewalert.wav
Voice Call > C:Program FilesMSN Messengerphone.wav
New Email > C:Program FilesMSN Messengernewemail.wav
New Message > C:Program FilesMSN Messengertype.wav
New Mobile Message > C:Program FilesMSN Messengerring.wav
Outgoing Phone Ring > C:Program FilesMSN Messengeroutgoing.wav
Voice Clip Finished > C:Program FilesMSN Messengervimdone.wavI believe that’s all of them.
Hope this helps.
You are very welcome!

Memberyou my dear ROCK MY BOX!!!
I’ve been running both msn 7.5 and wlm beta on my computer simulaneously now for months with no problems but the build I had (8.0.0566) decided it needed to be upgraded to the newest build. So I did and I found that my sounds no longer worked for 7.5 and I was like wtf when I discovered the option had been totally removed from windows registry as msn wasn’t even listed in windows sound scheme anymore. I’d just done a system restore to fix my computer back the way it was, but was no longer able to use the wlmbeta because it wanted the upgrade.
I’d posted over on mspglus and mess.be forums and lots of people have looked at the problem, but noone had any advice. I was just going to copy/paste the problem here when I just looked through the topics and low and behold, someone else was broken too and you being the awesomely smart person you are posted the fix (btw thankyou for attaching the reg file as there is no way I would’ve been smart enough to have gone through the tedious work of playing in regedit).
So yeah moral of my story, both my msns now work again, and you are a god!
Thanks bunches!

MemberI am a new member here and I would like to say thanks EvilSeph for your very helpful information that restored my sounds back.
Well I had a similar problem, only that WLM didn’t start at all and I got error 1635 all the time. I didn’t want to start a new topic so thought i will post my question here.
Now my question is: why can’t I install WLM beta and always get error 1635 ? I have a Sony VAIO notebook and I was getting the same error when trying to open Adobe PhotoShop CS and then found out that the fix was to install the latest version of SonicStage. Could these two problems be related ? Today, I received an email from MSN about the new WLM but I am a bit skeptical to try and install WLM again as I don’t want to go through the whole downgrading process again. After some research, I found that this problem is shared by only VAIO computers. I am yet to read about this problem on another computer. Any Ideas?
Thanks,

MemberHaving followed all the instructions given for getting sounds to work for Windows Live IM I an still without them. Seems when i goto control panel/sounds to try add from Program files they are in .wma format and the window that opens will only allow .wav format. I have tried C&P to free one up and that doesn’t work either. I keep getting an error message telling me the files are corrupt. But, they aren’t as i have accessed them using media player…….HELP!!!!!
