MemberA friend of mine recently installed Messanger Plus! that I recommended to him from this site, but he says he also got some spyware and a couple of Trojan downloaders through it. It is some C2Media toolbar for IE that really annoys him, but he’s not very techie sort of guy, all he has to combat spyware is ad-aware, which deletes loads of stuff, but they always come back.
I talked him through on the phone to track them down, and they seem to be in his C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersLocal settingsTemp folder, where there is a trojan executable which changes its name. It also seems to run couple of process all the time (kill one, another pops out), so it’s always in use and you can’t delete it.
I suppose I might take him my version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus and zap the trojan, but is there anything that might work apart from that?
Cheers

ParticipantI suggest that you start windows under safe mode, then try to delete those files again. In a similiar situation of mine, this worked.

MemberYeah, I suggested that, yet he claims that he can’t boot it in safe mode (in other words, doesn’t know how).

MemberThe reason he got the spyware installed on his computer was because he failed to read the sponsor message.
Whether or not you want to install this sponsor program is 100% optional, and Patchou has made it quite clear in the installation, and you shouldn’t really miss it.
The solution would be to uninstall Messenger Plus!, scan your system with Adware SE and Spybot S&D, then reinstall Messenger Plus! whilst taking a bit more care.
There’s no need to boot into safe mode.

MemberI got it last night with Kaspersky AV, removed 5-6 files, and then scanned it with Ad-Aware, Spy Sweeper, Spybot and Spyware Doctor. Seems to be fine now.
Thanks for the suggestions.

ParticipantPlease be aware that Messenger Plus! DOES NOT have spyware. Patchou has used a sponsor program provided by lop.com (which DOES make spyware/adware, where the spyware cleaners are setting off red light alarms).
In the end it’s a false alarm from spyware removers, and antivirus programs. Also please know if you remove anything from Messenger Plus! via a spyware remover, you will damage the uninstaller, and it will not remove properly.
My advice for the future: RTFM!!! Also, don’t ignore advice given.
I’m going to lock this thread only because it’s going to become a hot spot for people to complain about their opinions about it being spyware. There are already enough sites out there that choose ignorance over reality. This is not one.
