As you might know Yahoo! limited status messsage length starting from today morning, from 255 chars to 40 chars.
The attached patch removes this limitation. Just unzip & run. It will automatically find yahoomessenger.exe and modify a single byte, which in turn will make Yahoo! Messenger ignore the new max_custom_status XML tag which is sent by the server staring from today… you will then be able to use the good’old 255 length statuses 🙂
Enjoy!
PS: for any security freaks: this patch will just scan yahoomessenger.exe for the string “max_custom_status” and modify its first letter… nothing more 🙂
It should work with ANY version of YM which has this builtin limitation.
Update: for those who had problems with first version, the new one supports target file drag and drop and also looks for the file in a few more locations.

Hi, can you drop a mail to ian@nospammail.net (this is a real address) please. I want to talk to you about something.
Yahoo has acknowledged that the status message length was “accidently” reduced from 120 characters to 40, and state on their developer blog that they are fixing it and will issue an update soon.
Oh, good. =)
For anyone who uses HyperIM for their status – they also have a patch available from their site, although it appears to do the very same things as this one.

That is because it is the same patch (since that’s my site) 🙂
