As those of you who have been so valiantly battling the spam bots can attest, it’s a serious problem.
The biggest problem is a software called Xrumer. Here’s a video of the system in action.
Needless to say, I HATE spam bots.
Last night I installed a plugin that seems to be catching most (but not all) of them before they register, so we should see a dramatic drop in the volume of forum spam.
Let me know if you notice any difference.
Will do Jeff. Thanks for installing the plugin – let’s cross our fingers it gets ’em!
FWIW I’ve hardly seen any spam at all. I’ve only deleted a couple since you installed the plugin. At least for now, until they figure out a way around it, this seems to be doing the trick! Thanks!!!!
It seems like that new plugin is doing the job nicely.
Next up, I’m moving BBB to a new server. Should be somewhat speedier, but gives me a chance to hunker down and do some housecleaning — so to speak — and get things running properly again.
Adding a custom additional security question as a required field in registration usually defeats most of those automatic bots.
