I've got a few weird issues here that I'm hoping someone else might have some inkling what might be causing them, because I've been wrestling with them for a while now with no luck, nor has any Googling come across anyone else reporting anything like them.
Basically, there's two different issues, the first of which manifests in a number of ways all seemingly related to stuff wrapping in an IM window. First off, whenever someone in AIM 5.9 sends me a link that wraps around the window, I'm unable to click on it anywhere except the last line of the link, and even that isn't always reliable. Second, highlighting works really strangely, with the window having a tendency to jump all around when my highlighting hits the top or bottom of a wrapped line or the IM window. (The IM window at its current scroll position, that is, not the top or bottom of the entire IM history.)
Second, sometimes when I try to launch the client after having exited out of it in a single login session on my computer, it either won't open or won't bring up the sign on window; when I then exit it out or force the process to close, it loses my saved password, but will usually (about 90% of the time) work just fine the next time I try to open it. This is really reliable, I've reproduced it a number of times. Most commonly, it'll work perfectly the first time I launch it after I start up my computer. The second time it'll open the taskbar icon which will respond perfectly to a right-click except it won't open the Sign On window; Exit will work fine. Third time it won't open at all and I have to close the process from the Task Manager, and fourth time it'll open fine.
Overall these are really minor problems, not enough to push me into a new version or client (5.9 has too many quirks and features I've grown accustomed to and incorporated into my usual usage), but I'd still like to know if anyone else has run into them and if so, if they've found any fixes for any of them. I've already tried running it in just about every compatibility mode under the sun, and it seems to either run exactly the same (every Vista, every XP, 2000), or not run at all (98/ME).July 3, 2010 at 9:31 am #177021
I thought I fired up 5.9.6089 a few months ago and it went smoothly–are you using 5.9.6089? Have you used any addons or modified files at all; are you using any Windows themes that change the look of Windows?
I'm more comfortable and familiar with the AIM5 and older series than with AIM6 and newer, but 5.9 just might have to be retired from Windows7 at this point, sadly. I'll send myself an email to give it a whirl tomorrow, because maybe I never did install 5.9 on Windows7.July 3, 2010 at 7:40 pm #177020
Just gave 5.9.6089 a shot and it worked ok for me. No problems with wrapping links, and signing on/off worked properly even when I used two separate accounts on the machine, one administrator and one restricted.
Uninstall and do a fresh installation of 5.9.6089 and don't tinker with any customization or adremoval, and don't lock the computer, switch user accounts, or allow the screensaver to pop up (if it's configured to lock the computer upon resuming use). Confirm whether the problems recur, then try locking the computer or switching users, and see if it comes back around.October 2, 2010 at 3:25 am #177022
