What if we could create a registration interface that was faster?
How about you could be reading a thread as anon, and be able to register and post quickly? A single DHTML pop-up dialog that would allow a new user to register without all the BS. Allow up to 5 posts before the email is verified, and don’t require anything but a user name, email and password. The only limit would be that they cannot post a URL, and if they try to–immediately require them to validate their email, but don’t tell them why.
Any thoughts?
We would need a verification code on that as well. I like the idea, but where would we keep a link to that? We already have a “Register” button at the top. Or, are you saying that this is a replacement for our default registering thing? In that case, placement of this link would be quite easy.
I was thinking within topics, since that’s where one would normally decide “oh crap, I have to register so I can say this.”
It sounds good, but I think CAPTCHA–a very legible version–should still be used to avoid spam. Even if links are disabled, they can still describe a url similarly to emails, with creative formatting.
There should be logging of IPs and the accounts used. No more than one account per IP, per 14 days (negotiable), and the user should be reminded of a prior account name, incase they forgot it.
The period of account restriction per IP should be long enough to retain consistency within a thread, but short enough to allow for the chance of the IP being reassigned and reused.

The account wouldn’t expire, as I think you’re suggesting? It’d be a full normal account, just a faster way of making it.

Maybe the message can say: “You can reply to this topic as soon as you fill out our quick (and free) registration page”.
