MemberOk, I just heard on the radio earlier this morning (or maybe two mornings ago, I can’t remember) that telemarketing on cell phones is illegal, because you have to pay for each call. Well, today while I was recovering from finals, my cell phone rang, and it was some recording. I think it had to do with a vacation or something like that, I really don’t remember. However, I have the number that called, and I was wondering if there was a place that I could report this. Thanks alot.

MemberIf you register your cell number at https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx , then you shouldn’t get any more telemarketing calls anymore.
… Well, I think that’s how it works.

MemberYes colin there is…
Starting Jan 1, 2005, all cell phone numbers will be made public to telemarketing firms. This means as of Jan 1st our cell phones may start ringing with telemarketers on the other end, but unlike our home phone, most of us pay for our incoming calls. Telemarketers will end up costing us money on our cell phones.
According to the National Do Not Call List, we have until Dec. 15th, 2004 to get on the national “Do not call list” for cell phones. You need to call >1-888-382-1222 from the cell phone that you wish to have put on the “do not call list” to be put on the list. OR you can do it online very easily at http://www.donotcall.gov
Registering only takes a minute, is in effect for 5 years and will possibly save you money (and likely frustration).

i like the fact that “we have until Dec. 15th” but today’s date is…. the 17th. DOH
luckily my sister put mine on that list before the 15th…. I had no idea they were going to do that. I think its BS, especially since we have to pay for incoming calls.

MemberBrian, I found this, saying that the email is FALSE:
“Dec. 15th ‘deadline’ is bogus
In any case, the Federal Trade Commission does allow cell phone users to add their numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry — the same one already in force for landlines — either on the Web or by calling 1-888-382-1222.
Contrary to what some variants of the email rumor claim, there is no December 15, 2004 deadline for adding cell phone numbers to the list — indeed, there is no deadline whatsoever. “
However, if I get any more calls, I am going to sign up for the no call list. How much does it cost?

Membercolin – I’m seeing different results here, could you please provide the link you found?
And, the “No Call List” is at no charge for residents living in this country.

MemberI don’t remember seeing anywhere on that site that the deadline was on the 15th. I registered my cell phone number last night, and I got an email that said they put my number on the list, so that must mean there wasn’t a deadline (or if there was, it wasn’t the 15th).

MemberSo is it or is it not illegal?
December 18, 2004 at 2:43 am #109156Anna
ParticipantIt’s illegal, period.
Telemarketing calls are illegal in most states, regardless to a landline or not. I can’t imagine there’s any deadline for the do-not-call list, although once on the do-not-call list, you have the right to sue if you ever receive a telemarketing call… however, don’t mistaken this for teleresearch.
I work for a firm as a market research interviewer, and the government recognizes the public’s opinion as valuable, so teleresearch calls are every bit as legal. Eitehr way, tele-anything firms normally tend to aim for landlines, not cells. Cells are normally classified as “disposition” calls.
The average US household recieves about 15 telemarketing calls, and 1 teleresearch call per day… so the two are often confused (and I can tell you some hilarious stories of angry angry Americans :D). Regardless, every teleresearch firm should have their own internal do-not-call list, so you can request to be put on it if you ever do get called.

MemberWhoa, my dad just got home, and I told him about it. Well, he told me that he put all our cell phones on the do-not-call list, so that’s kind of weird. Hey Anna, I have the number that called, and it might actually have been “teleresearch”, is there any way I can tell by the number?
December 18, 2004 at 3:12 am #109157Anna
ParticipantNot that I know of, but then again, teleresearch is always live calls… no machine recordings.
You got BONED HA HA (don’t ask)
