Did you know that you can reward members for a good post by boosting their reputation? Here’s how our reputation system works.
The reputation system is basically a “kudos” or “props” thing. If you want to give someone a pat on the back that everyone can see, it’s easy. Find the post by them that you really like. Click this button () in the top-right corner of their post. You can give them a positive or negative reputation boost. Type a message for them, explaining why you liked their post (only they will see it). Then hit “Add to Reputation”. Voila! You’ve just given that person rep for their outstanding post.
There are some limitations, so the system doesn’t get abused. I’ll highlight them briefly. Oh, and by the way, the number of points you give other people is called your “reputation power”.
- You start with 10 reputation points.
- For every 1/2 year you are registered here, as well as 400 posts and 50 rep points, you gain 1 point of Reputation power.
- You must have a minimum of 20 posts and 5 reputation points to give reputation to other people.
- You can only give out 10 reputation points every 24 hours.
- Before giving rep to the same person again, you must spread it around to 7 other people.
What’s your reputation? You can check your own reputation by clicking “My BigBlueBall” and scrolling down. You’ll see your own reputation score, along with the 15 most recent reputation comments.
So the next time you see a really good post, give that person rep for their hard work.

You can get a rough idea by the little pip () under the person’s join date and information. You put your mouse over that person’s pip and it tells you a number and something about that number. There are a few rare red but those mean that those people brewed some trouble and got negative reputation points.
As for referrals, click here to learn about that.
Hope i answered what you wanted.
Edit: Also the more reputation points you get the more you get, like some people have two already
April 9, 2006 at 10:28 pm #138125williamleeMemberyep you answered 100% what I wanted to know thank you so much.

i believe the number you see when you hover over the pips is rounded down to the nearest category… like if you have, say, 104 rep points, it’ll show 100. if you have 86, it’ll show as 50. the only person who can see the exact points are the person themself, and probably Jeff.
April 9, 2006 at 10:45 pm #138113NessaParticipantYes, that’s what i meant to say by giving rough idea (rounded number) but thanks for making it more clear. If i’m not mistaken the numbers will be one of these, -50, -10, 0, 10, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 1000, 2000, 2500, 5000. So everyone has quite a long way to go ;).
April 10, 2006 at 9:05 am #138105RabidKittenParticipantAnd if you’d like to get an idea of whos who about the rep circuit, just check out the Members List and sort by Rep Points. Like at the moment we have Shifter, David, Jeff, Myself and Miami in the top 5 Rep holders.
April 12, 2006 at 8:15 pm #138126williamleeMemberI have another question about reputation points. when you give someone points. I noticed a box pops up and you choose pos. or neg. and a place where you can add a comment if you like, but my question is how many points does this give them? and or can you change that number. like say if it is just one point and lets say I want to give them 5 points is that possible?
April 12, 2006 at 8:27 pm #138102shifterMemberRegular members can only add or subtract 1 point at a time (you cannot change this). As Spike noted, this is to prevent abuse of the rep system. You can only give the same person another rep point only after you’ve spread rep to another 7 members.
April 13, 2006 at 2:19 pm #138106RabidKittenParticipantThough, staff members each have a different amount of pull than normal members. I believe. *yawn* It’s late. Or early. Whichever.
Really, every little point helps, expecially since only the user can see how many points exactly they have.
One thing I’ve noticed though, there’s a Positive and Negative option. Mine is automatically on Positive. Though, there is a ‘neutral’ option, a gray blip. Does that happen when someone doesn’t confirm they want positive? I’m just a little gray in that area since, well, I get gray blips from folks with a really positive message sometimes and it makes me go “Huh what where?”
April 13, 2006 at 3:07 pm #138114NessaParticipantIf i’m not mistaken the grey pips occur when new members or anyone with no reputation power yet (since they have only posted a few times or no times at all or have not been registered long enough) try to give you reputation. When they try to give you positive or negative, it shows up as neutral since they have no points to give. (regardless if they chose negative or positive). Hope i made myself clear!
