Mike Jones, a researcher with Microsoft, claims to have uncovered the first time the smiley ๐ was ever used. According to Mr. Jones, he has uncovered what he believes to be the original message in which the smiley was invented. The message was posted by Scott Fahlman on a bulletin board system back on September 19, 1982. Here’s Fahlman’s original post:

From: Scott E FahlmanI propose that the following character sequence for joke markers:

Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark things that are NOT jokes, given current trends. For this, use
๐
Did Jones actually uncover the first smiley? Did Fahlman realize what he was starting? Are smileys a benefit, or do they degrade the value of good writing?

September 14, 2002 at 2:42 pm #67016FanaticMemberLMAO@FAHLMAN & JONES!!!
Fahlman’s got some ego to think that he invented the smiley 20 years ago. ASCII art, shortcuts and other abbreviated forms of communication have been around at least since the 70’s.
Quote:quote:Are smileys a benefit, or do they degrade the value of good writing?Seriously, smileys have a place, especially in today’s world of abbreviated messaging (IM and SMS). Email is a step up in formality and deserves whole, correctly spelled words without cute symbols. In theory, you have more time to compose your thoughts since email is not a real-time conversation.
If you can’t share humor without adding LOL or :-)… either your joke isn’t funny or you need to brush up on your communication skills.

September 23, 2002 at 10:12 pm #67019VaderXMemberactions speak louder than ur words.
i believe smileys hav a great role when it comes to expressing ur emotions. in an IM u cant show the other person how u feel and smiley is the thing that does a great job… ๐
