KeymasterPublishers have been reeling from the rapid pace of change. Ten years ago, publishing meant books, newspapers and magazines. Today it means web sites, content management, and online syndication.
And now, instant messaging?
Yes, I ran across an interesting article at editorandpublisher.com. Here’s a brief excerpt:
The concept of the corporate buddy should be of interest to news publishers for a couple of reasons. First, instant messaging is clearly the purview of the young Internet user. For a news company seeking to interact with a younger audience, utilizing IM buddies is worth exploring. (Of course, the content of such buddies has to be of interest to that age group; teens aren’t going to care much about getting weather forecasts via IM, but they might be attracted by more creative uses of corporate buddies like chatting with bot versions of celebrities. Don’t laugh; ActiveBuddy has found that such celebrity-simulation bots have attracted huge numbers of users.)
Secondly, corporate buddies expand the appeal of instant messaging beyond the young. Certainly people older than 25 use IM applications, but where IM is really big is with the young. If publishers create IM buddy agents that offer convenient access to news and information — such as stock-portfolio buddies and baseball-game buddies — older Internet users will gravitate to them because of the speed and convenience of buddy agents over getting the information from the Web or via e-mail.

Memberactually, reading this I have an opinion about the writer thats not exactly flattering. Idiot comes to mind along with ignorant fool.
Seems the age break between young n old is 25, I gotta get a walking stick now.:)
He/she refers to ‘corporate buddies’, ‘IM buddies’, ‘simulation bots’, ‘IM buddie agents’ interchangeably, writers should have better communication skills than this. Insulting the ‘older’ +25 market is kinda cutting their own throat unless ofcourse the publication is kindergarten oriented.
Its my opinion that the writers next encounter with an IM client will be the first.
FWIW, this ‘cadet’ has a looooong way to go.

So hey! how can I take seriously anything this idiot wrote?rustedtight.

MemberOK, what I’m saying is;
Regarding IM, what the average Joe wants in his/her chat app is an equivalent fast n sleek Alfa Romeo/Porsche not some accessory ladened, added value, after market enhanced app., that now resembles a 30 ton 18 wheeler Mac truck.
I wonder where the writer got inspiration? after attending a group hug/wank seminar titled;
“A scientific review of innovations in chat applications, the engineering and chemistry thereof and related to market consumption and demographics”??
Possibly after attending the ‘industrial writers guild’ monthly religious retreat wherein the sermon of the day starts. “Every so often, an industry will experience a technological breakthrough that revolutionizes the way it operates,” thru to “In order to achieve such a breakthrough, the new technology must out perform the old, it must introduce new efficiency never before known, and it must save money”?? And the buzz word of the day? ‘buddy’.
Spare us all from these foolish cadets, hell the web is already here, why re-invent it and apply it to IM?
Publications via IM bots? I guess our cadet fell asleep during the important parts and just woke for the hug/wank session.Oh and to the ‘enhancers n after market developers, shut the (insert swear word here) up n leave IM alone.

Who am I to stand in the way of progress? lets all of us over 25, older, geriatric generation grab our walking sticks, retreat to our porsche n salivate while watching the youth cruise past in gleaming 18 wheelers.
