Some of you might have heard this, probably a lot of people, but the US Department of Justice if requesting a list of available web address indexed by Google, Yahoo, AOL and MSN, also they request a list of all search terms from US users from June 2005 to July 2005. So far everyone has submitted the requested information, except for Google. Now Google is fighting a subpoena to get the information.
The DoJ says it’s to see how easy it is for a minor to accidently access information that is HTM, as the government calls it, or simply Harmful to Minors. They also want to test each search engines filtering tools. Even though the subpoena says no information has to be given that can identify the people who search for the terms, Google still will not give out their information. According to reports, Google has two weeks to make their next move, whether is it to comply with the subpoena or to appeal it.
I’ve been seeing this around on news sites all over, and I just wondered what everone else thought. I mean is Google hiding something, or are they just simply doing what their motto says, “Don’t be evil.”? No personally identifing information is being sent, so it is not like Google is protecting their clients/users, there is nothing to protect in this case. I just find this whole thing interesting, just becuase I love Google and it involves legal battles, and one of my aspirations in life is to go to Law school someday :).

I highly doubt there is anything Google is trying to keep secret… what would there be to keep secret? They’re not being evil, and that’s why I support Google fully.
January 30, 2006 at 4:19 am #137401Jeff HesterKeymasterIf the government were to get such information, although it already has from other companies, what do they intend to do about it anyway? I just keep hearing they want so and so only to see what people search and…let me get this straight…test out search filters? I very much doubt that is the case. Why have they waited until now to do so? Just all sounds a bit weird to me.
