The near perfect IM program is Proteus for mac (http://www.versiontracker.com). It works with ICQ, Yahoo!, MSN, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, AOL, AOL Oscar (what is this?!), and Yahoo Japan.
Imports all your IM buddies automatically, you can add buddies through it, and if your buddy has 2 or more accounts, you can make them appear as one, and then choose which one to use when you want to chat w/ them. All the windows are customizable – any color or transparency you want (except the menu bars). It’s file transfer is a bit shaky…but it’s an Alpha version so stuff will get better.
Way cool.

July 10, 2003 at 9:20 am #69574flyinghighnowMemberI have used,
Yahoo
MSN Don’t like because you can’t log in invisable mode
ICQ To many people makeing programs to hack accounts or mess with your computer
AIM
Trillion
Paltalk
Cameracafe don’t use it now because it cost 10.95 a month
Iwon.com messenger not enough people using it
Exite messenger To many booters on it
Logitech Messenger not enough people using it
IRC to many people booting you and giving you the blue screen
Odigo
Netscape messenger to slow and lagged to much on it
Jabber messenger
Devil messenger Mostly for dating didn’t like it
Eyeball messenger not enough using it, and didn’t have very many in the chat rooms if you wanted to go into rooms and not use the messenger
Dwyco Had to send a message to someone hoping they will answer which most didn’t, so you had to try and get lots of friends to use it, and talk to them on it.Instant-t which allows you to connect to other messengers at same time. Would not let me log on other chats such as Yahoo, msn icq and aim with my account name and password keep trying to have me make a new account for each one.

Trillian
Good support but once you Install you can never get rid of it, until you get rid of Windows. I dont have more comments on this as I didn’t use it much…I’m not sure what you mean by that. You can just delete the Trillian folder and any shortcuts you created. No need to even mess with the registry.

Check out!I’m not big on blindly downloading executibles, but I did a quick google search. IMHO, it doesn’t compare to running your own Jabber server (which you can do for free).
I’ve used Trillian (currently just for AIM, ran out of contacts on the rest of the networks), and a few Jabber clients. Trillian is as near perfect as it gets for me, only needs Jabber support to be perfect (and that will be in the next version). Out of the Jabber clients I’ve used, I like Psi the best. I don’t like a lot of extra features (#8, for example, is something I specifically don’t want. I don’t have any interest in owning a webcam or viewing others’). I generally don’t miss many of the things that Trillian doesn’t support (unreliable file transfers are semi-annoying, but that’s why I have an FTP server) so it’s a perfect fit for me.
I’ve also tried Miranda, Gaim (Linux version, not the Windows one), Zeez, Integrity Messenger, and Odigo. None of them really appealed to me.
August 4, 2003 at 2:00 am #69575TigerbladeParticipantwhat i’m wondering is if there’s some program out there, similar to trillian, but that works more like DeadAIM. Here’s what i want, let me know of any programs you might know of that fit the bill::confused:
1. Blends multiple IM programs, namely MSN and AIM.
2. Combines chat boxes into one tabbed interface, like DeadAIM.
3. Still allows Away Messages, simple and easy. *EDIT: also must display OTHER PEOPLE’s away messages!!
4. Easy to manage merged contact list.
5. Decent looking – I dont need all the bells and whistles, i’d prefer to see whats going on with my chat window and contact list.
6. FREE*******
By request, here’s the edit-
I’ve used, and didnt like, Trillian, Miranda, and GoodAIM. For various reasons, each just didnt quite cut it, whether it be the look, the features, etc… so far miranda is my least favorite. I’m in the process of trying out GAIM, so i’ll let you know how that turns out…August 4, 2003 at 6:20 am #69558rustedtightMemberQuote:quote:what i’m wondering is if there’s some program out there, similar to trillian, but that works more like DeadAIM. This will narrow the choice n save a lot of wasted replies.
