In the February issue of Spin Magazine they published a list of the top 50 rock bands of all time… bands that have “had a roof-raising, history-changing sound, presence or hairstyle.” They also had to “clearly influence today’s music in undeniable ways” and “be bands that we care about deeply.”
Here’s the top ten:
- The Beatles
- The Ramones
- Led Zeppelin
- Bob Marley & The Wailers
- Nirvana
- Parliament/Funkadelic
- The Clash
- Public Enemy
- The Rolling Stones
- Beastie Boys
Ah yes…brings back memories of seeing the Ramones in concert back in ’79… oops! I’m dating myself!
So what do you think?

The Beatles are a no brainer.
The Ramones democratized rock-and-roll. Anyone can play three chords. Yeah!!!
Led Zeppelin was the trip of the 70s.
Bob Marley proves it was an equal-opportunity list. Though actually reggae had a huge influence on the Brit-rock scene.
Nirvana came into there own about the same time as Micro$oft, proving that Seattle can produce more than coffee and software mega-companies.
Parliament/Funkadelic? Not my scene.
The Clash kept the early 80s from getting too syrupy-electronic.
Public Enemy? Don’t know’em. Someone said they were rap or something.
Of course, the Stones has been carrying the torch longer than any of’em, and done it without getting stale. Though Keith Richards looks like death warmed over.
And the Beastie Boys? Well, they did make a helluva party song.
There’s a bunch of bands that DIDN’T make the list… no prog rock. No Bruce. Hmmph.
