:)Hi Jeff,
First thing i would like to check with you regarding my Yahoo instant messenger buddy list box. Under Login,View, Tools and Help, I realised sometimes certain portion right on top change the colours from white to yellow and blue. What happen?
How to remove the name of people under peference in webcam?
I realised i have removed and even blocked the person, but whenever i re-login, the names apppear again. How this person managed to do that by adding his own names under preference in webcam?About typing those that you have mentioned on filter1 to prevent from booting, do i need to delete all these first because i have found it in my filter1 notepad as follow:
ahole, aholes, asshole, assholes, asswipe, biatch, bitch, bitches, blo_job, blow_job, blowjob, cocksucker, cunt, cunts, dickhead, fuck, fucked, fucking, fuckoff, fucks, handjob, handjobs, motherfucker, mother-fucker, motherfuckers, muthafucker, muthafuckers, nigga, niggas, nigger, niggers, pedofile, pedophile, phag, phuc, phuck, phucked, phucker, shat, shit, shits, shithead, shitter, shitting
and after adding all these in as follow:
<<, , , url(, onLoad=, http://, www, I realised that Odigo chat program when i view my profile i still see my IP address appeared there even i put a tick to make it invisible to others, but other people profile cannot see their IP address, how they do that?
Is it possible to change IP address? Cause a few person keep trying to access to my computers as i have downloaded my zonealarm, my friend told me no use as some people use fake IP address? How to prevent all these people from hacking my computer
My computer was down for a few times recently and even i asked a technician guy to reformat it, it still not fuctioning well. Sometimes it said that my webcam and mouse not connected by it was connected properly. All these things never happen to me last time before i haven’t use any chat programs.
How should i take precautions against all these?
Kindly help me to solve all these problems and advise me if possible!
Waiting to hear from you as soon as possible!
Thanks!
Katerina

WTH happened when you posted your topic??? I gave up reading it 3/4’s the way thru…
First thing I would like to say is hello, an welcome 🙂
BUTQuote:quote:Hi Jeff,First thing i would like to check with you regarding my Yahoo instant messenger buddy list box
This is a public forum which means you post here, and everyone can have an advantage of helping you…
Im sure Jeff you love to help ya, but if you want to address him, try via email or privite messagesQuote:quote:I realised sometimes certain portion right on top change the colours from white to yellow and blue. What happen?I’m having a hard time understanding what you tried to explain. Could you edit it, so that we could possibly “understand” what you need help with better.
Quote:quote:About typing those that you have mentioned on filter1 to prevent from booting, do i need to delete all these first because i have found it in my filter1 notepadNO Just add the text Jeff provided us with at the end of the original text, and save it! Voila!
Quote:quote:I realisd another thing is when i chat with my friends, under Message Archive, there should be 2 persons conversation left behind but very strange, it only left mine, but my rest of my online friends chat with me have their message there except the one who is a Computer Engineer, why is it so?Have you asked your friends if your text is written there? Are you in invisible mode??
I’m not too sure about that one..Quote:quote:Another thing is recently i have problems in Yahoo, whenever i chat half way, the connection disconnected by itself and couldn’t get back for nearly 3 hrs or more!Never heard of it doing that before!! :S

Quote:quote:Is it possible to change IP address?I really dont think so! If your on cable, or an ISP’s high speed edition your IP address stays the same always, but if your on dial up, you get a different IP everytime you dial er up!
As for the rest of your questions, Im going to leave them up to another member to answer if they can!!
Good luck!!I.AM.CANADIAN!! Happy Birthday CANADA!!

Then when it came to your point about ADSL or Cable having a static IP… unless you pay for it… you don’t have one…. cause the dsl pipe has a table of IPs that you use… I have dsl… I really like the built in firewall, and I like my other firewall even better….
June 30, 2002 at 9:15 am #67970Jeff HesterKeymasterWOW! You’ve bundled a lot of questions in one message! I’ll try to break it down.
Quote:quote:First thing i would like to check with you regarding my Yahoo instant messenger buddy list box. Under Login,View, Tools and Help, I realised sometimes certain portion right on top change the colours from white to yellow and blue. What happen?I’m with Chewybear on this one… I’m not sure what problem you’re trying to describe. Can you be a bit more descriptive?
Quote:quote:How to remove the name of people under peference in webcam? I realised i have removed and even blocked the person, but whenever i re-login, the names apppear again. How this person managed to do that by adding his own names under preference in webcam? Are you referring to people seeing the “Always allow the following users to view my webcam” list in your webcam preferences? You’ve added some people at one time, and now you want to delete them? I’ve never used that feature… I always use “Always ask for my permission” which requires me to approve everyone who requests to view my webcam. You might try that option until we figure out a way to delete names permanently from your “allow” list.
Quote:quote:My friend told me is normal to have all those ****ing words, cause it’s a filter, is it true? That’s right. That file is a filter list that cleans up what you see in chats or instant messages. So if someone tries to get vulgar with you (sending one of the words in that list), you won’t have to see it. I don’t think those are standard though (maybe Fanatic knows…nudge-nudge).
Quote:quote:I realisd another thing is when i chat with my friends, under Message Archive, there should be 2 persons conversation left behind but very strange, it only left mine, but my rest of my online friends chat with me have their message there except the one who is a Computer Engineer, why is it so?You have message archiving turned on, right? It’s off by default. And when you open a conversation that you had with a friend, you only see your side of the conversation? That’s just plain spooky. It does display the two sides of the conversation in different colors… could there be a problem with your monitor? Or (this is a long shot) are you color blind? Just grasping for a possible explanation.
Quote:quote:Another thing is recently i have problems in Yahoo, whenever i chat half way, the connection disconnected by itself and couldn’t get back for nearly 3 hrs or more!Yahoo can be flakey sometimes, though 3 hours is unusual. I wouldn’t worry about it unless it happens regularly.
As for the IP address issues, I wouldn’t get to worried about it. Your IP address is almost certainly assigned dynamically by your ISP (and changes over time). The trouble is, if you’re connecting to other people using instant messaging, they can find your IP. However, since you’re using Zonealarm, you should be safe.
Your problems are many. You might consider uninstalling Yahoo Messenger, then download and reinstall the latest version. Sometimes that’s the easiest way to clear up a multitude of troubles.

(See my post here: https://bigblueball.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=718).
Quote:quote: Are you referring to people seeing the “Always allow the following users to view my webcam” list in your webcam preferences? I’ve never used that feature…I always use “Always ask for my permission” which requires me to approve everyone who requests to view my webcam. You might try that option until we figure out a way to delete names permanently from your “allow” list.Ahh Jeff…if only it was that simple! Unfortunately these users have found a way of adding themselves to your allow list. However I have realised that you do need to allow them to view first before they are able to add themselves. However there are times when you allow someone to view in good faith (by granting permission…I always have my preferences set to “Always ask for my permission”) only to find that they have added themselves to your allow list!
So far I have only discovered one way of removing these malicious users and that is to unistall and reinstall messenger. Once you have done that they will be removed from your allow list. I have also attempted to block these users but found that to be ineffective! I suspect that our answer will be found in one of those *.dll files.
Quote:quote: That’s right. That file is a filter list that cleans up what you see in chats or instant messages.Jeff, are you sure that the filter also operates in IM’s? I have found that people are still able to send me boot codes in an IM however if they use the same code in the main chat room it is filtered. Surely you would also see the font and fade codes (such as ***** size=”11″> and *****#d603f3,#c687fe,#8a87fe,#6561fe,#c701e2>) in your IM’s if the filter operated in your IM’s. If you see the fade and font codes in the main chat room with your filter on I would expect the same thing to occur in my IM’s.
I have also found that I am constantly adding to Jeffs filter as people find more code to use to amuse their juvenile minds. So add to yours when you can! You can look here: http://www.zakie.fsnet.co.uk/ChatRoomsStuff/Help/bootfilterstopper.htm for more help with your filter.
I agree with Jeff that a clean install of Messenger would most likely solve most of your problems. I do however suggest that you scan for viruses before reinstalling messenger (you can do that here: http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp This is a free and secure scan and will detect most virii.) You should also scan disk and defrag often.
It is also a good idea to make sure that your file transfer options(login>preferences>file transfer) are set so that you (at the very least!) have to give permission before a file transfer takes place.
A good firewall (such as Zonealarm) is a great tool. However your firewall is only as good as the settings you use…so make sure you check your settings!
It is possible that your problems with connecting can be attributed to your firewall conflicting with Messenger. Look at the settings under “connection” (Login>preferences>connection) and you may find that you need to change your settings there to allow for your firewall.
I don’t use the archive feauture so I can’t help you there. Hope you are able to solve most of your problems!

June 30, 2002 at 1:54 pm #67983Innocent_LadyMemberDear Jeff Hester 🙂
Thanks for taking your time and troubles to read my message! Also thanks for you guys for your quick response.
Sorry Jeff and chewybear, i have confused you guys about the colour changed. Actually it’s at the portion where these words appeared under Under Login,View, Tools and Help.
Only this portion, cause by right the whole yahoo message box is totally white except the portion that i meantioned whenever i have encountered problems like disconnected and reconnected back it’ll happpen.About the conversation in the message box, sorry guys, again i have confused you. I’m referrring after we have finished the conversation and closed the message box. I’m referring to the message archive, cause i suspected that computer engineering guy hacked my computer because he told me he likes me very much and jealous when i told him that i chat with others, and he speaks arabic and my yahoo e-mail some of the English words change from English to Arabic. Even i redownload the lastest Yahoo version again many times, it’ still the same and that is frustrating!
Yes, Jeff, I’m referring to people seeing the “Always allow the following users to view my webcam”, but i never added anyone in, only realised whenever i went to chat room, some names will appear in that box.
About disconnecting in Yahoo, that not only applied to my Yahoo messenger, it applies to my other chat programs too and that is why i asked whether i can change my IP address!
How does one know the other party IP address when using instant messaging. Oh God,it seems like very dangerous to use all instant messaging on net. But if i don’t use instant messaging i’ll miss my all online friends cause now i’m addicted chatting with them.!
I’ll try to redownload my Yahoo again although i have redownloaded more than 5 to 6 times..!
By the way, forgive me for my English, i don’t really speak well cause i’m a Chinese! I happened to come across this page only yesterday
Thanks Mr Jeff Hester and the rest of the guys for trying to solve my problems.
June 30, 2002 at 4:24 pm #67977detn8rParticipantI think she means when its “white” its really shaded out so that she cant click on it right?
Quote:quote:that you may think that dail up has a ever-changing IP…… really it’s not….Actually if your on dial up your IP address DOES change every time you connect.. Ive actually confirmed it. If you click on start and select run, the type in Winipcfg, it reveals your IP address. I check it out last night, and then again, theis morinig, and yes they are different.

There is a significantly large number of ‘dial-up’ users who have static IP addresses. Simply because you dont, why assume nobody on ‘dial-up’ has a static addy.

Ma’am, your concerns regarding IP addresses in both this forum and others borders on paranoia.
You have Zonealarm install, I assume you have a anti virus app installed, That being so you have a far greater risk of falling pregnant this year than by being hacked deliberately because of your personality or ID within the next 3 years. Please, relax, enjoy the medium, you are only making yourself unhappy by listening to bad information regarding IP addresses.rustedtight

No, they are not new, they have been around since ‘web year’ dot.rustedtight

With a decent antivirus application and ZoneAlarm installed, you should be fine. Don’t assume that because ZoneAlarm detects IPs trying to reach your computer that they are the cause of your computer problems. ZoneAlarm often has the effect of making people more paranoid that before, only because you can see all this network traffic that you didn’t see before.
The thing to remember is that with ZoneAlarm, it’s very easy for you to deny those IP addresses to communicate with your computer. In simple terms, YOU are in control.
BTW, I chatted with Jeff about this, and he agrees.

Thank you and Jeff for your response!Hi Jeff, by the way you agreed that you wanted to post for me the forum about the case with the IP address 177…….., where is it? And you did agreed that something strange happening to my computers as it keeps changing colours, remember you chatted with me yesterday?I’m still waiting for your answer and keep looking into the forum but i couldn’t find it?Edited by – Fanatic on 07/05/2002 12:49:21

I’m not against any member at all, or making this forum to create problems! But you sound as though i like to create problems from here! Dear Sir, don’t get me wrong, someone can be nasty to me and yet you still side them! Is it I’m being a Chinese and you guys are European? Just asking?I’m not being negative about what other said “MR FANATIC”. If you are to be my position, keep facing a lot of problems in your computer and yet people still tell you nasty things, i beg everyone sure bounce to be frustrated and angry, and moreover my computer recently just received Trojan virus and sent to SARC for analysis, and my computer totally down 2 to 3 times cause hacked by someone and uptil now, don’t know who the person is!!!!!!!!!!I really facing problems with my computers and that was why i search for this forum so that someone can help me up and not saying nasty things to me! Why they can said something bad about me and i can’t, isn’t it not fair to me? Please don’t mistaken my intention of abusing this forum. Don’t get me wrong! Moreover i’m a lady, what can i do????Think for yourself Mr Fanatic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 5, 2002 at 11:00 pm #67969Jeff HesterKeymasterAs far as I can tell, no one has said anything nasty to you. Rustedtight said that you have a better chance of getting pregnant than getting deliberately hacked. Maybe you misunderstood that as an insult, but I don’t think it was meant that way.
The point is, you’re worrying too much about something that is highly unlikely. I don’t think the problems you’re having on your computer are the result of being “hacked.” You’ve got ZoneAlarm. You are safe!
As for all the many other computer problems you’re having, it’s tough to debug via a forum. But your best bet is to tackle them one-by-one. Break the problem down into many, smaller problems and solve them one at a time. It’s easier for you and easier for the rest of us who really are ready to help you. Honest.
