ParticipantI’ve been getting newsletters emailed to me from X10 after I ordered there promotional free remote deal. Big shock! X10 likes to spam! I expected that going into it. But I went to remove myself from there email list and this is the warning I got:
Quote:quote:Please Note – If you choose to opt-out of future email, X10 is obligated to circulate your email address to other list owners with whom X10 places advertisements. Please be aware that while the intention is to remove your email address from receiving X10 emails, X10 cannot guarantee how your email address will be used by any outside party. What the hell kind of crap is that? Keep getting spam from us or we’ll be obliged to circulate your email to other spammers. I’m being blackmailed into keeping there newsletter subscription!
Apparently I’ll just have to set my email filter to send X10 straight to the trash. Seems to be the lesser of the two evils.

ParticipantThat’s BS, and I’m thinking that that may be illegal to do…

MemberIn any case, X10 would have to have your permission to distribute your e-mail address to other parties, or else surely it would break the regulations of the Data Protection Act. So, providing you didn’t give them permission, perhaps with one of those annoying litte ‘Check here if you with to recieve….’ boxes, it would be illegal. Correct me if i’m wrong.

MemberIt’s like those AIM virus sites. You can’t read the disclaimer until you have already entered the site, and the disclaimer states that you agree to the terms and conditions by entering the site.
So they try and screw you either way. I would cancel their letter and then cancel letters from every other company they give your email address to. I doubt any other companies that recieve it would do the same thing and threaten you.

KeymasterShifter, you may have agreed to let them do this when you originally signed up. I haven’t checked the fine print of their TOS, but some are worded with such double-speak that they can do pretty much whatever they want to do.
For a long time, X-10 was one of the biggest advertisers via pop-up and pop-under ads — really cheesy ones that implied all kinds of nasty stuff. I guess they figure sex sells, and advertising is a numbers game.
I had at one time a few years ago signed up for news updates from them, but at some point I opted-out and I haven’t seen any that I can recall in the past 6 months. There is hope!

I’m sure there was something in there that I unknowingly agreed to that lets them do this without legal issues, but its pretty damn dirty. I knew I’d be subjecting myself to spam by taking advantage of there offer, but I was taken aback by this policy of selling my address if I unsubscribe. They’re supposed to be enticing me back to actually pay for a product, which is what there newsletter’s are basically trying to do. I’m fine with that, that’s what I agreed to but don’t give me the option to unsubscribe if you’re going to be nasty about it. Anyway, my Gmail is now filtering it out so its the pretty much the same as unsubscribing as far as I’m concerned.
