MemberI posted this as a reply to another thread, but I think it’s important enough to post as a new topic on it’s own. See previous thread for a lil background: https://bigblueball.com/forums/msn-messenger-support/34335-msn-messenger-timing-out.html
Here’s how we resolved our problems. I believe it’s important for BOTH parties to complete these steps as there is virtually no way to determine whose installation is corrupt. If you follow these steps, you will have a clean uninstall of MSN Messenger and any previous or upgraded versions thereof; AND you will eliminate Windows Messenger from fighting with MSN Messenger for control over your IM client:
- In Start>Run type services.msc and be sure that (Windows) “Messenger” is disabled.
- Sign out of MSN Messenger.
- In Control Panel use the Add/Remove Programs to remove MSN Messenger and MSN Gaming Zone *if applicable*
- Run Accessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup. Be sure to check Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, Offline Files (temporary and otherwise) and Recycle Bin.
- In Start>Run type regedit. Go to HKey_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/MSNMessenger. Highlight it, click Edit and click Delete. The whole folder.
- Repeat Step 5 for HKey_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/MSNMessenger.
- REBOOT PC NOW
- Download and SAVE *to desktop or somewhere you make note of that’s easily found* MSN Messenger v7.5.0311 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d…DisplayLang=en I suppose you could run it from the site, but we didn’t … and the version is personal preference of course. We found v7.5.0322 buggy even before we ran into all these problems and had downgraded to version 7 because of it.
- Double-click the icon entitled Install_MSN_Messenger.exe and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Reboot again.
We have had no time-outs, no invisibility issues, no game load dysfunctions, and no file transfer problems since we EACH did this.
I hope it works for you as well as it worked for us.
Cheers! 😀

ParticipantWell I’m sure this is gonna help many people, thanks!
Martinbradley/Evilseph/Shifter, what do you think about moving this post to our FAQ section?

MemberI surely hope it does princeG, and it is my pleasure to pass along the info since we were really ready to tear our hair out (or at the very least nuke MSN forever … lol)
I guess I should add that we were both running XP ~ Home and Pro respectively. I can’t vouch for it’s effectiveness on any other OS.

MemberThis fix has been known for a long while now and I am sure we suggested it to you and everyone else but we don’t like to use it. It is too powerful a fix and should be used as a last resort. This is essentially the same mind-set as telling everyone to just format. Hopefully you get what I mean.

MemberI guess I just couldn’t find it when pouring through the volumes of posts. I surely didn’t intend to be redundant. 😉
As for it being “too powerful a fix” (?) … I’m guessing that when all else seems to fail (as it did in my case), this five minute remedy is just the analgesic needed for the MSN headache that just won’t quit. It left my buddy list intact, as well as my display pics, so I was happy … if you get what I mean. 😀 -
