Quote:Push all the IM sub sections other than news into the parent section.Push all the Off Topic boards back into the main one, there isn’t a need for those.
Push the Computer Support sections all back into the parent.
Part of the post before included:
Quote:Create a general IM news board for all of the news, there is no need to separate it, it’s sparse as it is.Could we perhaps not get rid of the forums, but allow a filter? Have a “news board” with topics within tied to a section, they MUST be tied to a section (even if it’s the “other” category). Is this possible under vB?

ParticipantOkay – this is what I suggest:
Proposed New Order:
BigBlueBall
>BBB Podcast>Staff Boards [PRIVATE]
> >[Team areas if required]>Premier Members
>Forum Support
IM
>IM in the Real world>AOL Msgr
>Windows Live Msgr
>Yahoo! Msgr
>Other IM
>Link to: Online Status Indicator
>IM News
> >(Filter by)
> >AOL
> >Y!
> >WLM
> >Other
> >ALLComputing & Technology
>General Issues / Support>Online Privacy
Community Center
>Intro’s>Off Topic
“>” refers to in one level.

ParticipantLooks good, but I am not even sure we need the “Online Status Indicator” anymore. Probably for that we could just move those questions into either AIM, Y!, WLM, etc, or move into Computers and Technology. Having a whole forum for that just doesn’t seem nessisary since rarely are there posts in there. Maybe we keep a sticky or something someplace (Guessing Computers and Technology) for OSI’s that we know of and that are working.
Also, I’m not sure about the placement of the Premier Member’s forum. Most of that stuff posted there will be directly related to BBB, I’m thinking move that to the “BigBlueBall” category.

ParticipantChanges noted, I agree. I think our deal with OSI is that we were the official board for a while or something..

ParticipantAnyone else? Feedback?
I’m going to go with this new design if nobody has any complaints. What is shown above is correct other than that I’ll leave all the news sub-boards, since those fit well like that.

MemberI was going to edit Dave’s post, but I thought that would be wrong. So, for clarity:

MemberI just felt using ‘-‘s is clearer than ‘>’s.
Anyway, my opinion:
First off, moving the staff forums is going to annoy me – greatly. Since the public can’t see them – why move them? What difference does it make?…I’m so used to the design now I can navigate in my sleep.
Secondly, why seperate “BigBlueBall” from “Community”? I always thought they were one and the same. BigBlueBall *IS* the community and by seperating them, you’re making it seem like the community comes second or vise versa with regards to BigBlueBall.
In the end, I don’t see why we are even touching the layout. A few small changes is enough, I think. But I’ll get back to you after I’ve _really_ looked at it.

MemberI like the IM setup. I think a whole category just for computing tech. is a waste.
OK, approaching this is trickier than I thought. *thinks*.

MemberHmm…do we really need an announcements forum? Why not have all our announcements have full lime-light – on the front page?
I don’t think the BBB Podcast needs its own section and on that note, I think we should suspend all further “recordings” of podcasts and focus on what is more important instead – up to date information and reshaping.
We could bring back any “special” stuff after we hit the world hard with a new version of BBB.

MemberOur news will most likely be separate from the forums, so there’s no need to keep the forums, except maybe archive purposes.

Right, except we don’t have a news system right now, so thats not relevant. The news forums stay until there is a new system, thus they need to be thought about.

MemberMy thought is, wouldn’t it be a good idea to make a section or a small note/sticky topic in Other IM for ICQ? I know, it’s not too mainstream anymore, but it is a instant messaging client after all, and it shouldn’t be completely ignored, you know?
Just my 2 cents. 🙂

MemberWell if we do that, why not have one for XFire and Adium and Miranda and meebo and all those? Exactly my point.
Venom brings up a good point, however. I think we need to devise a solution for the Other IM center which a) dosn’t discriminate against/for IM clients and b) covers them all in one way or another, fairly. Kinda off topic, I know, but it’s something to think about.

I STILL don’t “like” the idea of ICQ being considered an “other IM” application seeing the amount of people who still use it. The drop in people requesting help on it, might just be because they don’t know that “Other IM” includes ICQ. But that is just my opinion.
XFire is hardly IM. In theory, of course, but how can you compare it to a mainstream top 4? Same with a low end client like Miranda or even web messenger Meebo.
I think in the description of “Other IM” we need to strongly emphasize the clients we are not holding a forum for. I seriously can’t see how we have a forum for Pidgin and not ICQ…. but whatever.
Dave, as for your second layout, I don’t agree with it. I’ll post my suggestion in a bit.
