Quote:Increase community. Commit to socialization, whether it be a scheduled chat on the IRC channel, or anything that will promote people making friends. Friends will make people think twice about not coming back. Games that are multi player and involve chat are good, anything where you can get a more intimate feel for someones character and personality.Let’s commit to a public chat time.
I suggest Sunday night at 11pm EST, Monday at 9-11PM, or Wednesday 9-11PM. Any of these times work for anyone? Can we really commit to this?
Should we try and use some kind of structure?
How should we raise awareness about the chat sessions?

ParticipantCan’t do it at 11pm Sunday EST for me, but free on Monday and Wednesday at those times. I am at my computer then anyways, so I know I can commit.
I think we should try to use this type of structure, maybe have special topics of the week or something we can discuss as well.
To raise awareness about the chat sessions, I would say posting in the BigBlueBall Announcemens area. First we alert people and tell them just what this is, and then every week or so we make a new post saying what the starter topic that week is. Starter topics can always get people talking then lead off to who knows where!

ParticipantThis does sound like a good idea but it can do one of two things: One when people come in they may become friends with us and keep coming back or Two they can see how mean some people end up being in IRC and leave and never come back.
I’ll be very blunt here as someone who goes to our irc oftenly: It’s not for the faint. I’ve noticed that when someone new comes in and says “asl” they aren’t treated very nicely. I’m not picking on anyone since i obviously enjoy going there since i keep going back but then again i’m not the type or girl who tries to get offended too easily by comments.
In the end the point i’m trying to get with this is mainly that if we do agree to this everyone must agree to be friendly and helpful to any new person who enters unless the person is just there looking for trouble.
And a huge reminder, keep staff quarrels out of the public channel even if majority is staff in there. You have to keep in mind that there is always 1 or 2 people there that aren’t and really don’t deserve to read some of the things put out there.
As a final add in, don’t forget socialization between ourselves and this is in regards outside of “staff meetings”. I’m not saying we should all be best friends forever in any way, but hey at least be able to say hey what’s up, how’s life and such to each other. I do have that relationship with most people and i’m glad with that (Heather, Warren, Dave, Spike, Dermot, Ryan, Michael, Philip, Graham, occassionally Brock). Anyone else i may have had one or two words of interaction but that’s it! So it’d be nice if we all at least got to chat a bit like Ryan, Dermot, Michael, Dave, Spike, Graham, and me did today in irc. It was nice.

Right – I’m a blunt asshole and I offend people–I know. I’ll tone it down, but especially during an “event.”

ParticipantI think that for staff only meetings, we should go into a channel such as #staff or #meeting. That way, it is kept out of the regular chat for all.
When we have a chat for all, we will keep it in the main room. Since we should have more people there, some of us may need to tone it down.

ParticipantI notice that if people are being scared off and whatnot, that multipul channels are usually the next step. Heck, on a MUSH I play we have channels that are public, some for meetings, some for specific groups and one (my personal favorite of course) called raunchy where essentially anything goes. You don’t like it, don’t go in, but generally the main room should be open for the most general conversations.
*shrug* just me.

Heck, I /like/ you and you pissed me off with your lack of empathy or really giving a damn about anyone else earlier *shrug* Definately scare-worthy for new folks.

Hehe it’s ok David, we all love you! Besides, take asshole out of there and put bitch and you got me 😀 Especially with my new found attitude of “I’m tired of trying to make other people happy, not be appreciated for it, so I don’t give a frig I’m going to take care of me and to hell with the rest of it”!
Anyways, I’m out of school now so those days are good for me.

And that’s why we love you =D.
I think we should put a big banner on the homepage, start doing some major advertising for it.
Not sure about anyone else, but maybe it would be good to have a group of us who are good in Photoshop be the designated “site graphic designers”, incase we need something whipped up?

KeymasterOf those times, Sunday night at 11pm works best for me. The 9-11pm EST times (that’s 6-8pm PST) are a bit early for me generally speaking, although I might be able to arrange it once a week.
If we have a scheduled chat, and promote it on the site/newsletter/podcast/etc then I agree we need to be much more forgiving with the noobs. 😉

ParticipantUmm – prime WoW time for me and the Aussies . . . although they can probably go one session without being healed by the hand of raebralop but they won’t like it *giggle*
Just lemme know when it is and I’ll pencil it in.

Sunday… 11PM to… Whenever, or?
These times are okay with me, but, how is this structured?
Do we stay for the full two hours/whenever we want? Do we take shifts for the days?ShadowDogMU wrote:I think we should put a big banner on the homepage, start doing some major advertising for it.Agreed. A “Join us in our Public Chat!” banner/logo would be great.

MemberWhen socialization becomes a chore – it becomes a big letdown. Just point out the existance of IRC and how to properly use it and we should be fine.
Can we at least trial that? I really hate it when we’re told to talk to people. I do it on my own, thank you very much.
A regular meeting? No. A meeting for a purpose? Yes. I think you’ll find that people HATE meetings in the work place because they’re so regular and without true purpose. If there’s a topic that everyone knows about and it doesn’t become a re-occuring “chore” then the meetings are fine. But if it becomes to serious…you won’t see me attending most of them.
As everyone has said before, we give to BigBlueBall when we can. However, my long “absence”, albeit being online, is due to holding a silent protest against the plethora of broken promises we’ve faced coming from the Administration. And don’t tell me a silent protest is useless – I protested and protested but nothing came of it. A silent protest was all we had, and I can finally say I’m happy that things are moving again.

ParticipantWithout a schedule for meetings…how do you orchestrate them when we need to have one?
That’s the issue I see with not having them at a set time each week–even if they don’t end up happening every week.

MemberHaving a set time each week is bad. It makes people expect things that don’t happen — broken promises.
Rather let people know in advance. I suggest putting it in #staff’s topic and +s’ing the channel. #staff needs to be locked down in order to be effective.
In the past sites that have run weekly meetings (even if they did not occur) have died. Because their staff just show up with nothing to say, just to ensure their spot on staff.
I’m speaking from experience…take it as you will.

Agreed. However, a usual time and place we hang out . . . that could work, too. No agenda or anything, that’s too serious. But maybe we already do that . . . dunno.
