at school all the computers use Internet Explorer, but they have so much spyware and adware, and the amount of toolbars in IE takes up half of the screen, literally. I was wandering how to remove them becuase they have IE options locked and the toolbar locked (when you go to view>toolbars its all grayed out) also you cannot get to add/remove programs. Also installing something like Ad-Aware or the like wouldn’t work, can’t install anything. I have even go to the Head Honcho Computer Dude at our school and he won’t do anything about it.

February 17, 2005 at 11:37 pm #114882colinMemberYou can run online spyware/adware detection programs, but I don’t know if it would actually remove the spyware/adware from the computer. Try that then get back to me.
February 17, 2005 at 11:53 pm #114881OreoMemberIf he cannot install programs I doubt he will be able to remove them. One of the biggest problems with using a spyware remover is that a school is often considered like a buisness, therefore they are not entitled to the FREE version because one place would be using so many. A pop-up blocker might be a good idea, except what about the legitimate programs that use pop-ups? It is really VERY difficult for schools to manage the Internet. Often times they have to filter out the word “SEX” to keep porn off of the site; but then you have the problem of people doing legitimate searches for classes like Biology (say you were looking for sex characteristics of a fetus for a report…that would be blocked). Perhaps, you should write down some of the problems you have come across and some suggestions you have for the IT department. Start low (talking to the people in charge), if that does not work go a bit higher. If the principal does not want to hear it or you don’t really want to go that far, see if you can post something in your school’s newspaper or talk to a student counsil member. If your school does not have a newspaper, this might be a good way to start one. I hope this helps…I know exactly what you are talking about, but just realize that the tech people have trouble too (and some of them are less knowledgable than some of you students 😉 )
February 18, 2005 at 1:43 am #114885DrBroccoliParticipantwell heres the thing, if I posted in the paper most people would have absolutley no idea what IE is, most kids in my class of trouble logging in, opening word and hitting print. I am on the student council but we do jack didly squat. The school does have “internet security” called F-Secure but in the taskbar you see it then you hover over it and it say error….. but you cannot turn it on without administrative access. Its ridiculus the school also used Bess (or N2H2) you go to google search for anything under images and boom your blocked for looking at “porn”. It just seems I’ll have to live with unfair computer usage until I get out of there…
