Alright, here’s the deal. I’m pretty sure this is a Yahoo Messenger problem. Could be wrong, but all signs (in my mind) point to it. When I get IM’s in that program, the icons in my tray disappear. Now, they don’t go away as if you exited the program. They go invisible. The tray doesn’t shrink down to close around the time (like it normally looks with nothing in your tray open), it stays enlarged but the icons are gone. I’ll post a picture to clarify if anyone is confused. Does anyone know how to stop this? The icons come back if I restart, but I can’t find any other way than that to retrieve them.

Would you be by any chance running an old version of windows, with little ram?
Problems like this can happen when ram is very low, for instance if you have very little, and what you do have is being used by many other programs. The IMs dont actually add their own tray icon, so I wouldn’t think it affects it.
Try resizing the taskbar when they go, do they come back? This might refresh it.
Do you have a lot of other programs running?
Usually, I have Yahoo Messenger, AIM, and IE running, and that’s it. Occasionally an MP3 player. I use WIndows ME, and have 256 MB of RAM. Haven’t tried resizing the taskbar, but next time this happens I’ll give it a shot.
Any other ideas on the problem?
Thanks!Here’s something that might help your ME windows to run smoother Windows ME is a resource hog as well as Windows 98 they hold parts of your ram even after its not in use goto http://www.webattack.com/get/fastdefrag.shtml and download fastdefrag it should fix your problem also it will keep you pc running at optimal speed .
Interestingly enough, I ran that program…. and my tray icons disappeared. So I guess it’s not the IMs from Yahoo.
Thanks anyway.The Problem with ME, 98 etc… is the way they reserver ram for the interface. They did it very poorly – the NT kernels are much better, they do not limit it, and hence way less problems -NT kernels used in 2k,NT,XP…
Have you scanned for viruses? Have you done a sfc (system file checker). Looks like there could be some problem somewhere.
