I’ve only just started to use Trillian, so forgive the ‘newbie’ requests! Are the following statements correct, or have I the wrong end of the stick?
(i) Although Trillian is capable of signing you on with various IM accounts from differing providers, it is not a ‘true’ compatibility client as you still require an account on each of the respective networks to converse with those users (excluding AIM/ICQ), i.e. It is not possible to message Yahoo users from your MSN or AIM account – in effect you are simply managing each of them through the same interface?
(ii) Whilst a bubble pop-up informs me automatically that I have new Hotmail, when I have read the email, you have to manually right-click and select ‘Clear Mail Notification’ to get rid of the blue envelope icon?
(iii) Adding Yahoo contacts via the ‘Buddy Wizard’ in Trillian does not automatically propgate these users to your Contacts/BuddyList in Y! messenger.
(iv) Adding Yahoo contacts via the ‘Buddy Wizard’ in Trillian does not send Y! messenger users a notification message to tell then you added them as a friend?
Many thanks in advance!
May 13, 2004 at 11:18 pm #79746SpikeMemberI. Very true, I don’t think there is a messenger program that let you send im’s cross-messenger.
II. I believe that is true, although I have never used that feature becuase noone emails me on my Hotmail account anyway.
III. No, unfortunately, this is very true. So if you are going to use Trillian, stick with it, don’t switch back and forth.
IV. Yes, this is also true, but isn’t that a good thing? I have found it a nuisance from day 1 of using yahoo.
Sorry if I am wrong on any of these, these are from past experiences or educated guesses.
May 14, 2004 at 12:54 am #79743quietbritishjimMemberAs spike says, (i) is correct.
(ii) is not correct, it should clear automatically when you read the email, although it can be a bit unreliable.
(iii) and (iv) are definitely not correct, at least in theory. If you’ve found different then I guess you happen to be lucky/unlucky (depending on what feature it is). I don’t use yahoo much, certainly not with trillian basic, so I don’t know how reliable it is with these.
May 14, 2004 at 11:32 am #79745askingtoomuchParticipantThanks for the advice chaps – ‘unreliable’ seems to be the order of the day, at least with the Basic version of Trillian. Hardly much of an advertisement for those who are considering upgrading!
Incase anyone is trying to replicate these problems and feels it’s a system issue rather than a client problem, I’m running Win 2000 Pro SP4 with IE 6 – but I doubt this is the case.
A note on (iv) – granted, the actual note can be a bit of a nuisance, but the buddy should know they’ve been added to your list and have the offer of reciprocating… don’t you think?
Incidentally I can now add an additional item:
(v) Open email, click on hyperlink in email body (new browser window pops-up with URL), return to email, click any general navigation (delete, next message, move email to folder) and it returns me to the Hotmail log-in page? I guess there is something a bit flaky (surprise surprise) about the Trillian–>Hotmail authentication?
Regardless, I guess these are queries best reloved using Trillian’s own forums at http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/forums/ – which brings me to another point…
I hate to be all “emperor’s new clothes” about it, but can anybody read the thread text in, for example the FAQs (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=52) – it all looks blank to me! I have registered with them, and I don’t look to be blocking any cookies or anything like that…
May 15, 2004 at 11:34 am #79744askingtoomuchParticipantJust a quick update on (iii) and (iv)
Ignore both of these. It does actually work, you just have remember to only type the Yahoo when using the Buddy Wizard, i.e. bigblueforum.
If you type [email protected] – it doesn’t[/b] give you an error, and adds the user in your contacts, but will (a) not show you the online status of that user, and (b) will only let you IM them if they initiated the chat first (if you try to initiate the chat, it states they are offline and will not forward your offline message).
Hope this helps any other Trillian newbies out there!
