This is very odd and I’m not sure what it is – When my machine started up, I wanted to see what was running, so I did a Con-Alt-Del and there was a process being run called
. It disappeared though when I hit Con-Alt-Del again and I have no idea what it is. Anyone know what that is? Spyware or a virus?
One more thing, I noticed a few days ago (for no reason) my yahoo toolbar disappeared!
Thanks in advance..

Let’s start with the unknown process. I would suggest going to MSCONFIG and seeing if you can find something in the startup list that shows with a name of “unknown” or possibly blank. If you need instruction on how to do this, you can refer here.
Let me know what you find. Even if something does exist, it does not mean it’s always bad, so before you disable anything it would be advisable to do some research or post it here so you can get some opinions on it.
It would also be a good idea to run Malwarebytes just to do a sweep for malware. Make sure you update the definitions and use the “Quick Scan” option.
As for the missing toolbar, in IE go to View / Toolbars and make sure there is a check next to the Yahoo Toolbar.
Let me know what you find on these.
March 12, 2009 at 12:02 am #173699Mac_BlueMemberI did the scans and whatever that was, is gone, at least for now..
As for the toolbar, I did go to view/toolbars, there was check mark beside it, but still wasn’t showing up. So, I did an uninstall, now I can’t find the IE version 6 to install it again. I can’t use 7 because my IE running isn’t v 7. Stupid question, or can I just install whatever new toolbar and it’ll work fine with version 6?
Thanks PatnDoris.

As for the toolbar – it shouldn’t matter what version of IE you have just go ahead and install it – I’ve never known YH toolbar to be dependent on something like that.
March 13, 2009 at 6:46 pm #173700Mac_BlueMemberMy mistake..It’s still there when I do a con-alt-del during startup mode.
Is Malwarebytes to download ok to use with windows 98? I just looked and it says it’s windows 2000 and higher.March 13, 2009 at 8:28 pm #173703Doris KenneyParticipantAccording to their forums, it will probably run but not correctly on Windows98. Did the logfile it produced show that it removed any files? Or did it say “no malicious items found”?
SuperAntiSpyware says it works on all versions of Windows. It is better than Spybot or Ad-Aware in my opinion.
Did you look in MSCONFIG? Did you find anything in there that was blank or had “unknown” in the name?

I find that running Hijackthis whenever I am experiencing computer trouble, and posting the log on this Computer Support Forum does the job. The members there are very experienced, and can tell you what to remove, and how to remove the bad stuff from your system.
I would recommend trying this if there still seems to be something wrong with your system.
