KeymasterDoes anybody know how to do this? I have two windows xp on my computer. I tried to install it again but it made another copy instead. Now when I boot up there’s two windows XP. How do I remove one? Has this ever happened to anybody?

KeymasterYeah I know it might not makes sense to some sorry. Seems like these things only happen to me. Maybe this will better explain it sorry. I did want to reformat. I thought that I could just put the Windows XP installation cd again and install it and it would reformat my computer on it’s own. I was under the impression it would overwrite and therefore reformat all my info when I installed it again. Instead it just made another Windows XP on my hardrive. When I boot up the computer it gives me two choices to start with. It simply looks like this.
1. Windows XP Pro
2. Windows XP ProI only want one though. I’m not sure if this may be affecting my pc’s performance or not. It’s kind of annoying having to pick each time I boot up and I don’t know if having a second one is taking up memory or what.

ParticipantJust go back into Windows XP setup, delete all the partitions there, and create a new one.
Although, if you are fine with not having the extra space… you can just open c:boot.ini with notepad and edit out the OS you don’t want.November 1, 2004 at 2:36 pm #103568Jeff Hester
KeymasterHmm that makes sense. I’ll try that. Thanks.

MemberCheck to make sure that there is only one copy of your windows folder on your computer (it didnt install in a new location). If there is more then one go and do what Dave said, but if you only have one it is only your boot loader that is wrong. This problem happens sometimes when you reinstall windows XP.. it will install it correctly, but it will create 2 copys of the boot loader, when there will actually only be one (both copys will boot to the same copy of windows). To fix this you can just edit your boot.ini file (C:boot.ini) and delete the lines for the second boot loader.

KeymasterIt says this in the boot.ini
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:$WIN_NT$.~BTBOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional” /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:$WIN_NT$.~BTBOOTSECT.DAT=”Microsoft Windows XP Setup”What do I do?

MemberWeird… I’ve never seen it do that before..
Anyways, its not the same problem that I mentioned in my previous post. So I would suggest deleting and remaking partitoins, formatting and reinstalling windows.November 1, 2004 at 8:42 pm #103582David
ParticipantI would not modify boot.ini, you have a malformed configuration. I’d suggest, as Sathallrin, that you backup your data, and remove all your partitions and install again.

KeymasterAlright thanks. I’ll try it after I backup everything.

MemberActually, all this means is that you have ran the Windows XP installer, but didn’t let it finish. Deleting the entry with ‘$WIN_NT$.~BT’, as well as deleting the C:$WIN_NT$.~BT folder should be enough.

KeymasterHmm well I’m done backing up everything in a cd now. Yes I did not let it finish because I didn’t want it to install another one so now my computer got stuck booting up those two things. So are you saying it should look like this after and if I modify the boot ini file?
Timeout=5
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional” /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptInSorry I’m not really computer smart. I just know the basics.

Memberit actually should look like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional” /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptInIt changes the default from the Setup to your actual copy of windows.

KeymasterI get this message after I try to save the file:
Cannot create the C:/boot.ini file
Make sure that the path and filename are correct.Anyway I thank you all for your input. I think I’m just going to end up reformatting my computer correctly tomorrow morning. This is turning into a hassle and I don’t want to keep taking bothering you all with this lol. Thanks again. 🙂

Make sure that the path and filename are correct.If you want anymore help, then… what text editor are you using and how are you loading the file?
If you don’t want anymore help, then just ignore this question.
