MemberTo my knowledge there are two types of RAM, DDR and SDR. Currently, I have 256 MB of DDR RAM in my PC. I was given a stick of 256 MB SDR RAM, is it possible for me to have both types in my PC at the same time, so that I would have a total of 512 MB?
Also, an additional question about performance. I have 1.25 Ghz Athlon XP Processor, and as above, 256 MB of DDR RAM. I have two options:
1) Upgrade the RAM, buy another stick of 256 MB, or,
2) Upgrade the processor to 2.00 GhzI can only afford one of them (lol) so which one would give me the best performance upgrade? This second question is possibly a bit vague, but answer both questions if you can please. Thanks for your help.

ParticipantYou cannot mix SDR and DDR RAM together, some motherboards do support both types of RAM, but usually only one can be in use at a time.
I’d highly recommend that you get more RAM, a 1.25Ghz CPU is just fine for 99.9% for the things you will want to do. Just make sure that you have the same clock speed RAM. For instance you cannot mix DDR400Mhz (pc3200) with DDR333Mhz (pc2700), you will not be able to boot up. You can get CPUz, or Sandra 2004 benchmarking software to check your RAM clock speed.
Good luck. đŸ™‚

MemberOk then, thanks very much. I know that the DDR RAM I currently have is PC133. But woah, just downloaded SANDRA and which module do I use? Help!

ParticipantI don’t have it installed, but I believe there is a ‘Memory’ speed test that you can run. Or general system information.
I don’t think DDR RAM can be pc133, only SDR RAM can be pc133.

MemberOk, thanks. I think DDR can be 133. I built the PC myself you see, so I had to buy all the componants, I asked for DDR RAM and was then asked, ‘133?’ so I said yes, and the guy gave it me, so, from that i’m assuming its DDR PC 133. Thanks for your help though.
I’ve run the memory benchmark test on SANDRA, this is what I got…
RAM Bandwidth Int Buffered aEMMX/aSSE 1290MB/s
RAM Bandwidth Float Buffered aEMMX/aSSE 1215MB/sCan anyone interpret that for me?
