Please go easy. I’m not very skilled at chat and am just learning how to use Live Messenger. I have a laptop with a webcam on the lid and it is running Windows 7; my father has a desktop with a webcam hooked to it running Windows 7; my wife has an old laptop with a USB webcam running Windows XP.
Over the weekend, I noticed that I no longer have the “start a video call” option for my father when I click his contact in Live when he is online.
He can start a video call with me, but I can’t with him.
I can start a video call with my wife.
I have looked everywhere for a setting on my computer and would lead to this and I’m totally lost.
Anyone have any help for me? I can IM him just fine…video call is out of the question though for some reason and it is fairly recent. I don’t recall making any changes at all but I can’t rule that out.

It could be that your contact is signing in via a web messenger, or a multi-client program like Trillian. In those cases, video will not be supported.
It could also be that the cam is not connecting properly on the contact’s end. I would suggest since it sounds like an external cam, to disconnect it, reboot the computer and then reconnect it. The contact should make sure it is set up properly in WLM and then try the call again. They may also need to update drivers for the webcam from the manufacturer’s website or through Windows update.
And finally, if it was working and suddenly stops, there is always the chance it’s just a server glitch and will resolve on it’s own.
Good luck!
