KeymasterI don’t know if this is supposed to happen but in safe mode I see an account in Windows XP named “Administrator” and when I click on it a password is requested so I have no idea who it is and my brother doesn’t recall such an account.I cannot remove the account through control panel because it is a password account. (Note: In normal mode in control panel the account does not appear.)
Now I remember when I first got Windows XP I immediately got this worm that only affected windows xp where the computer would start a shutdown timer and restart, soon after being logged on an account. I remember the solution mentioned this worm would form an account, and I clearly removed it and solved the whole problem using Norton Antivirus steps.
Now I recently ran Norton Antivirus, SpyBot, and Ad-Aware in Safe mode and no virus, trojan, adware or spyware was found. My computer hasn’t been acting funky or anything suspicious at all. Now everytime I go in safe mode (which I haven’t done in ages) I see that Administrator password protected account. I only see it when in safe mode. What could it be? Could it be just leftovers from the time I had that problem? Because I just ran a worm removal tool from Norton and cleared the account created and some system registries but not in safe mode.

MemberWell, I suppose that’s possible if it said it would create an account. Also, you may want to try a spyware remover with more…um….cajones. Maybe try CounterSpy or Microsoft Anti-spy. I have to say I’ve been won over by these programs and they are some good stuff. You may not find what you think you have…but you could find something you never knew you had. 🙂

Participantthis doesn’t sound very good.I will suggest the same as Oreo a spyware remover with more…um….cajones (*lol* this was funny) you might find something you never knew you had (bad surprise that will be) 😀

MemberWhen you install Windows XP you are asked to create an administrator account and password. I don’t think you can skip this. It does it automatically to ensure that there’s always someone who has administrator access.
When I log on normally it isn’t there, but when I go into safe mode it is. I wouldn’t worry about any viruses/adware/spyware.
Also, the worm you got was probably the Blaster worm.

KeymasterYes it was that worm. I had forgotten the name of it though. Phew it’s good to know that Martin. Now I think I remember there was an account that windows xp made and asked for a password. I think it was something like that (was so long ago) I don’t remember the password though. Still I will try these other spyware/adware removers that have more “cojOnes”. *mischievious chuckle at that word*
Thanks for the suggetions everyone!

MemberDon’t worry MiamiGuy =)
It is normal to have an Administrator account. You will not see it in Normal mode but you will see it under Safe Mode. You will see it too under Normal mode if you don’t have any other “administrator” permission account.
Relax 😉

Memberso what exactly is the point of having two admin accounts? is it safe to delete this “admin” that shows in safe mode?
April 27, 2005 at 2:37 pm #120123MartinBradley
MemberI don’t think you can delete it, it’s just to ensure that there is always an account with administrator priviliges available.

MemberThe Administrator account can be deleted (NOT by normal means) but why would you want to delete it? It is there as part of Windows. Trust me and keep it =) It is there in case you might have deleted all your other admin accounts. Think of what happen if you don’t have any admin account left in your system =P

MemberI had a virus on my computer not so long ago, and basically couldn’t use anything on an administrator account in normal mode. Therefore imagine my relief when I found I could access this built in Administrator account in safe mode.
