Would anyone know of a program that closes all unusued ports? All the research I’ve done says for computer safety/security close all unused ports and turn off certain services. None say which ones or how or if there is a program that will take all unused ports or listening ports and close them .
Any one know of any?
these are referred to as firewalls. you can download a software/Personal Firewall (most operating systems come with one installed) that will block connections to your computer (depending on the settings).
Default:Windows’s Internet Connection Firewall,iptables for unix/linux/MAC OS X
More: ZoneAlarm, BlackICE (works great in ‘Paranoid’ mode)
Wikipedia: Firewall Software Category, Computer network security
you might also want to look into Core Force – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_force. It is freely available unlike most other Personal Firewall-like softwares for Windows.
you can also put a ‘hardened’ linux or OpenBSD box (made from an old computer that you found while diving in dumpsters) ‘in front’ of your PC to protect you from attack. if you lack the skills you can buy a ‘router’ (Linksys, D-LINK, 3COM, etc) and put it infront of your computer for a ‘few bucks’ off eBay. they will protect you from attacks because these ‘routers’/modified boxes do not allow connections through unless you explicitly set them up to (as long as UPnP is not enabled).
