Hey Everyone. Here’s the situation.
I have an old computer running Windows 98 that I’d like to get XP on. Now, I don’t want to keep my files on it. I want to wipe the thing clean, and start over new. (I’m pretty sure this can be done by means of reformatting, but I’m clueless on that topic.) How can this be acheived easily? I’ve searched many sites but found nothing relating specifically to what I want to do. Thanks in advance BBB-ers.
Just boot your system with the Win XP disc, and when it gets to it, delete your Win 98 partition and install XP. I remember there being a part of the installation where they let you do that. That’ll wipe out all the old files and the old OS, and put XP on.

the link that arsenal posted is good for simply upgrading, and all the information in there is good, but i noticed that the title of the whole article is “Beginners Guides: Upgrading Win98 to Windows XP Modernizing an old operating system, without reinstalling all your programs and software.” – if you dont want to keep any of your old data (are you sure?? no important files or anything? you’ve got them ALL backed up??), then hurricane’s post works just fine. the XP installation should give you an option to format the current windows partition and start fresh.
Are you talking about something that I’d need the upgrade disc to use? I have the windows XP installation disc for a new computer, not an upgrade one. I can’t seem to find a “Delete Partition” area on it, either.
Are you using it when you’re on Win 98? You have to have your system boot from it when you boot your computer. Then as you proceed, there will be a part where you can delete your current partition and make a new one.
To set your system to boot from CD, you have to enter the BIOS, and change the boot priority so CD-ROM is the first boot device.
i was assuming you’d have the standard XP installation disc, like you say (not any upgrade discs).
i’m not entirely sure what you’ll be looking at, since i’ve never upgraded directlly from 98 to XP on the same machine. i know that when i reinstalled XP on my machine, it had an option to delete the current Windows partition and start over. i would assume it would give you the same option, but then again maybe not.
Do I need a seperate Serial number if I already installed XP on one computer using that serial key, and I want to upgrade another computer from Windows 98?
Yes, installing the same licence on more than one computer is illegal, and XP will only work for a few days until it will force you to authenticate with there servers or phone in for an authorization code.
