I just switched to AIM, temporarily, until I find decide upon a multiprotocol IM client that supports webcams. (I used to use Gaim, but I just got a webcam for Christmas!)
Anyway… the video cam works, but the computer screen is frozen. I can talk and and my buddy (who is also using AIM 6) can see me, but I can’t do anything with my mouse. I can’t end the video session, move the window, get to the text screens or anything. My only option has been to shut down AIM via task manager. Also – just curious – why do I have 2 options as default webcam? Creative Webcam Live! and Creative Webcam Live! (VFW)?
Many Thanks!
Windows XP
Creative Webcam Live!
AIM 6.0.28.1January 1, 2007 at 12:27 am #156180operafluteMemberHere’s an update-
It freezes when I “talk” too. I can use the other programs on my computer, and can contine to “talk” but can’t access any other other part of AIM: I can’t adjust talk volume/mute, send or view IM (although I do receive IM’s, I just can’t click the window to see them.) The only way to get out is Ctrl-Alt-Del.
This is annoying!January 1, 2007 at 4:23 am #156179Jon8RFCMemberI can’t think of anything at the moment; be assured though, you aren’t being ignored 🙂
And as for the selection, the VFW is an acronym for “Video For Windows”. I’m not sure which one AIM prefers, and I used a non-VFW webcam that I got back in 2000, but it quit working with the latest versions of AIM…but it still works with Skype. I’m guessing that the VFW option would be a good choice as far as compatibility goes, since I think it either uses different drivers or operates differently.
January 1, 2007 at 3:12 pm #156181operafluteMemberI just started using AIM, so I’ve never used 5.9. Maybe I should try that – can one still download it?
I thought it funny that I had 2 webcam options and only one webcam! The non-VFW selection works fine, btw. Or… maybe not! Maybe that’s my problem! I seem to remember that the VFW version didn’t work at all. I’ll have to retest it, though.January 2, 2007 at 2:22 am #156182operafluteMemberOkay – here’s the latest. I installed 5.9 and voila – the windows do not freeze! But in a little test, my buddy can hear me, but I can’t hear my buddy in either talk or video. I went through the video/audio tuner, and it say everything is a-ok, but, it’s not!
FYI – I can hear fine in Skype.January 2, 2007 at 5:28 pm #156183operafluteMemberWell, it looks like the audio issue is on my buddy’s end. But here’s an intersting twist: when I was using 6.0 I could “talk” with my ichat buddies (although my window would freeze up as described in the original post – windows would freeze up whether I was talking to ichat or a windows AIM user, btw). But now that I’m on 5.9 (where the windows don’t freeze up) I can’t “talk” with my ichat buddies. It says they don’t support talk. I thought 5.9 was supposed to be MORE compatible with ichat.
Suggestions? Maybe I should start a new thread with this issue… -
