Somebody sent me a virus when i was chatting with him through yahoo instant messenger 6 . Im using windows 98 and he told me he was uploading a virus on my puter  a trojan. well i ran my antivirus (AVG) and yes i do have a virus on it. AVG cant heal it so now what do i do? any suggestions?
February 18, 2005 at 7:50 am #114935SS_AntiHackerMemberDear hersshey,
Can you tell me what is the virus name? if possible could you also tell me the virus’s file name? That would be a start because nobody can help you without knowing what you’ve been infected with.
February 18, 2005 at 1:19 pm #114932MartinBradleyMemberIf you do know that, then you’ll be able to search Symantec for removal instructions.
February 18, 2005 at 5:29 pm #114931EEDOKMemberif AVG can detect it, go into safe mode(by hitting F8 repeadtly while your computer is booting up) and run AVG from safe mode.
February 25, 2005 at 7:54 pm #114940-bAbY_meX-ParticipantI’m using PC-cillin, and the first thing I do is turn on Emergency Lock. But since yours is a trojan, and your anti-virus software can’t heal it, better check removal instructions from the website of your anti-virus software and follow it.
February 27, 2005 at 8:37 am #114938SubStreamMemberI say reformat. You can never trust your system after an anti-virus fails to take care of the problem… or at least I don’t… Once the system is infected and you know your anti-virus failed you… you could essentially be doomed to key loggers that are hidden beyond your ability to find them… I suggest you reformat and get a much greater knowledge on IT…
February 27, 2005 at 2:29 pm #114930OreoMemberThe Anti-virus did not fail….it FOUND IT…it simply cannot remove it. The answer to everything is not to reformat. Not everyone NEEDS to know EVERYTHING about IT. Remember we have users of all kinds here and scaring some one into needlessly reformatting may do more harm than good.
February 28, 2005 at 1:32 am #114939SubStreamMember#1. I never said it didn’t find it i said it failed them… meaning it didn’t do what needed to be done-delete the file
#2 I didn’t say everyone needs to know everything about IT
#3 Once an anti-virus has been allowed to run, it is possible for the system files to be compromised and there is no full proof way to find every virus and get rid of all of it’s components. Some viruses are invisible to housecall and other online scanners and there is no full proof virus protection or virus remover that removes every single virus in existence. If that was the case then protecting a computer against hackers would be easy. It is SAFER to assume that the person & or program and the virus that infected you is very dangerous than it is to assume a scan or software program will protect you or ensure your protection. The fact of the matter is that some viruses cannot be removed and do more damage as time goes by. The longer you assume you are safe the more damage may possibly occur with certain viruses. Denying that fact would be ignorant.
February 28, 2005 at 3:45 am #114929Jeff HesterKeymasterWhether it’s the right solution in this case or not, 90% of the people out there would royally screw themselves if they attempted to reformat their computer. It’s not a casual solution for most people, although certainly it certainly would remove the virus. 🙂
February 28, 2005 at 10:06 pm #114936SS_AntiHackerMemberJeff is right =)
Formatting should only be use as the last option. Most problems can be solved without reformatting. Fixing a problem is by learning the problem and come up with a solution. Formatting is just like taking the easy road to the solution without knowing about the problem. Hihi, hope nobody’s confuse with what I’m saying =P
P.S: If all users have enough knowledge of ITs, we IT would soon be out of jobs =D..hihihi 😉
March 1, 2005 at 11:09 am #114941-bAbY_meX-ParticipantI agree, too. Reformatting should only be done when all other possible solutions to the virus problem didn’t work.
March 2, 2005 at 3:34 am #114934UnSaKreDMemberAs firmly suggested by SS/Jeff and Oreo. Formatting should be only used as a last effort.
If AVG can detect the virus but not remove it, as suggested before search symantec to remove it.
Never consider formatting your computer as the first option when your current Anti-Virus is unable to quarantine or remove it.
In some cases, all you need to do is boot to safe mode, and run the virus scan from there.
The virus might have embedded itself into a system file, and in the current mode, your anti-virus product is unable to remove it.
If one anti-virus is not doing the trick, try switching to a different anti virus product.
Although with Windows 98, id rule out Nortans since it is very memory expensive.
You also should check free online virus scanners, such as panda’s online scanner.
March 3, 2005 at 3:38 pm #114937herssheyMemberHey thanks everyone for replying…I ran my (AVG) in safe mode and it says I have NO viruses. So Im hoping its gone now. Maybe I will try that Panda anti-virus just to make sure. 🙂
March 7, 2005 at 11:31 pm #114933Namrepus221MemberThere is one Java Virus that AVG can’t delete on it’s own.
If you can go into your Java control panel and clear the cache it will eliminate it.
Unless you tell us what the name of the virus is we can’t help you any further.
