Voice chat/video chat software

First off, what platform(s) are you running?

If you’re both on Windows, most of the modern IM products provide decent voice and video chat support, including MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and AIM. They are all free.

There are also several specialized products that can provide better quality, but with some trade-offs such as a price and/or smaller network of users (which might not be an issue if you and your friend can agree on a software package and you don’t need to contact anyone else). Some of these include PalTalk, Logitech VideoCall, Microsoft NetMeeting and Eyeball Chat.

The options are fewer if you’re using a Mac.
