I don’t normally get excited about new films coming out, but this film looks brilliant:woot: . So far most comments have been favourable. I am a fan of Mr Spielberg but not such a great fan of Tom, but he might prove me wrong this time, you never know. Some films you have to see at the cinema and I think this is definately one of them! :0)
June 23, 2005 at 7:50 am #124843MartinBradleyMemberI saw the trailer when I went to see Hitchhikers Guide, this film looks really good so I’ll be going to see it.
Have you seen the original, that’s fairly good too!
June 24, 2005 at 1:03 am #124850colinMemberI think I am going to pass on this film. I had to read War of the Worlds along with the Time Machine this past summer, and I hated them. I know that it will probably be a good movie, but I was just too scarred by the book.
June 24, 2005 at 2:16 pm #124851Crazy PenguinMemberWhat’s wrong with war of the world’s and the time machine? From what I remember they were fairly good if a touch out-dated… Two of the genuine classics of sci-fi. Though that said a lot of times if you are forced to read a book in school you enjoy it less….
Personally I think the film could be quite good… but it could also be truly abysmal… one or the other

The original? You mean the BOOK that was written all of the way back in the 1800’s?? 😉
June 24, 2005 at 10:40 pm #124855CoolMindedMemberWith Tom hyping it up and the awsome special effects, I’m game for seeing this movie.

depends which movie he’s talking about. when i saw all the ads coming out for the Hitchhiker’s Guide, I figured I’d go and read the book if it’s supposed to be so great. i was not impressed. it’s not very funny, it has a few miserable attempts at cracking a joke, and parts of it just get annoying to read. that stupid robot… that still annoys me. he may have intended it to be funny, but it’s just #*&%ing annoying.
June 25, 2005 at 1:11 am #124847RabidKittenParticipant*clutches the books to her chest* THOMAS!!! *gasping, has an anxiety attack* I’m surprised at you!
The whole book, I thought, was very amusing. Not “funny” but amusing. Going off on tangeants for no reason, the wild ideas of a restaurant at the end of the universe and things of that nature. And really, I liked Marvin…heheh…annoyed everyone, had a skewed vision of the world and overall just a horrible little piece of machinery that can do just about anything and knows what’ll happen if he does, but does it anyway without expressing the consequences just because they told him too. Like when they stole that stunt ship and nearly plummeted into the sun! Marvin unlocked it for them, but knew it was a remote ship and what it was going to do…but he did it anyway and his explanation was “You didn’t ask…”
Ugh, I’m only part way through “Restaurant at the End of the Universe” because I got sidetracked by “the perks of being a wallflower” but I’m starting it up again and I’m finding it simply splendid.
June 25, 2005 at 2:13 am #124845TigerbladeParticipantMeh. I didnt read the other books, i decided just the first one was more than enough for me.
anyway… we should actually be talking about War of the Worlds. I thought the original was pretty good, i’m not sure if they can do it justice today. I think i might wait to see it until it’s at the Value Cinema, meaning it’s a buck-fifty instead of nine dollars a ticket. much better deal.
June 25, 2005 at 2:36 am #124848QwertyMemberWhen we were studying American History, im almost positive I read something about War of the Worlds in movie form.
So that means this one [could be] the second movie adaption.
Correct me if im wrong, which i very well could be.
June 25, 2005 at 1:50 pm #124852Crazy PenguinMemberSince HHGTG has come up, i’m going to have to say that i enjoyed most of the hitchhikers books (the last one was a bit meh, though) and found them pretty funny, it’s very British though i’d say… and for all of you who have neve rlistened to the original radio series (which in my humble opinion is better than the books) then here’s a site where you can listen in http://www.appleisp.net/quicktime/hitch.html
June 25, 2005 at 7:05 pm #124849Red DevilMemberI’m fairly sure that there is an older version of The War of the Worlds film. Can’t say i’ve ever seen it though. And I think that the new film is looking pretty good. I’ll be going to see it. 😀
And HHGTTG is one of the funniest, most random books i’ve ever read. I’ve read the entire trilogy of five parts and enjoyed them all… well, the last one not as much, but it’s still worth reading. Marvin is without a doubt my favourite character. I’ll have to listen to the radio series when i get chance.

Can’t say i’ve ever seen it though. yes, there is. it was rather good, actually, given what they could do for the time it was made. which is why i’m not sure how much justice the new version can do the story. i’ve heard they changed a few things from the original story, which of course all book-to-movie transitions do. i dont know if i’ll see it right away, i’ll see what others have to say about it before i go check it out myself.June 30, 2005 at 10:30 pm #124853AqeelParticipantLOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The new Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg movie “War of the Worlds” took in $21.3 million during its first day in U.S. and Canadian theaters, the biggest Wednesday debut for a Paramount Pictures movie.
Read the whole story here.July 1, 2005 at 1:49 am #124854NessaParticipantI personally can’t wait to see the movie when i get a chance to go see it…While i was at Universal Studios in Hollywood, they allowed us to see one of the scenes to the movie, and it had a great set up. It seems to be a good movie and i shall find out if it is as soon as i go watch it…
