I notice that on most other forums, the moderators could care less if someone said something like “i agree” or “I dont think so.” And people come here, and they don’t know any better, and im sure that most don’t read the posting guidelines, and don’t understand that we don’t want any of that here.
I think that a message should be put on the reply page in red, kind of like in winamps forums, that tells users not to post pointless crap.
March 21, 2004 at 2:19 am #82702shifterMemberHey, if it makes our job easier, I’m all for it. 🙂
March 21, 2004 at 2:57 am #82695DavidParticipantHeck yeah, I’m all for that.
(mhm, I think the above was EXACTLY what we are against. :P)

March 21, 2004 at 5:15 am #82690tangledlisaMemberWhere does it say in the guidelines “do not give your opinion”. Who cares if someone writes that they agree or disagree. It may be short and in need of reasoning but at least it’s better than reading catty comments made by people obviously more intrigued with getting the last word rather then the actual topic. I however DID happen to find this in the posting guidelines:
Respect Your Fellow Members
BigBlueBall is a community of people who share a common interest in instant messaging. There are newbies and experts; programmers and casual users; young and old; all kinds of people participate in the forums. Everyone brings something unique to the forums (yes, even you!). Your personality, experience and self-expression add dimension and make the forums an interesting and useful place. Be yourself—but always remember to respect your fellow members. As you write, remember my personal rule of thumb: Don’t say anything that would embarrass your mother!
I’m thinking that’s why people choose to visit/re-visit BBB..because it’s not like most other forums.
March 21, 2004 at 5:27 am #82701shifterMemberThats right on the money Browneyes078, I couldn’t agree more. However, I think the idea would be to decrease useless comments like: “Right on”, “Sweet”, That’s cool!”. These are not opinions (in my opinion :P), but simple statements. Opinions require thought and at least one structured sentence. Obviously, there are times when comments such as these may actually be appropriate, like in this topic for example. But. the main idea would be to make new members aware that this forum is quality oriented. A simple think twice before posting that lone “lol” comment. How does that sound?
March 21, 2004 at 5:42 am #82689tangledlisaMemberSooo.. as long as those “simple statements” are kept in the random topics it’s ok? I nominate you to be the pointless crap sorter 😉
Off my soapbox for now, we’re in agreement.
March 21, 2004 at 5:44 am #82706colinMemberBasicly when people say stuff like that they are just trying to get their post count up. I think we (all BigBlueBaller’s) need to crack down on that.

Aren’t I already?

Dude, Anyone with Red or Green stars is.
March 21, 2004 at 7:44 am #82680Jeff HesterKeymasterI don’t feel so strongly about this one. I’m all for quality over quantity, but I don’t think we need to make the policy any more complex than it already is.
I DO agree that the policy is probably not read by most people, and having a link at the top of the forum would make it more visible.
I’ve also considered removing the “Quick Reply” and adding a note to the top of the normal reply screen; that might slow people down and make them think for a second or two before they submit a vacuous response.

Yes, I think that a simple note would be good, I think that most users will read it. And in response to browneyes, I wasnt saying that users shouldn’t post their opinions. I was saying that users don’t need to post 3 word opinions 😉
something like this:
March 21, 2004 at 4:55 pm #82687FaizanMemberThe idea someguy suggested is good, and many forum sites have this already implemented. But what Jeff said about switching off the quick reply box is not good. Dial-up users will be against it, because the reply page takes ages to load which is just annoying when trying to reply, and when it loads, you almost forget what you were trying to say. So, I am all against sqitching off the quick reply box. 🙁
March 21, 2004 at 7:30 pm #82683detn8rParticipantI think this is all that needs to be said if at all. If you want to add about three word posts, add it to the posting rules & guidlines.
And as for the removal of quick reply, it’s awesome to have. Obvisiously it’s quicker, but not a loss if it’s gone.
March 21, 2004 at 8:36 pm #82699shifterMemberI like that one Detn8r. I think you’re correct, that’s about all that’s needed. Is it possible to put this above the quick reply as well? That would eliminate the need to eliminate the quick reply.
