Memberi have a webcam and have attempted to have conversations using the audio and video on msn messenger, but it isn’t very good. the picture quality is alright, but it is sticky and sometimes it is substantially delayed. the audio also cuts in and out. both my and my friend’s webcams are logitech webcams with microphones in them. what can i do to fix this? why is this happening? or is this as good as it gets? any ideas?

Memberi found where to download it from, but it doesn’t say anything about Windows XP.

ParticipantNetmeeting is a program allowing you to make real-time P2P (free) calls with other Internet users. Included are both video and voice capabilities. To place a call, you will need to other user’s IP address.
Netmeeting is already included with all Windows OS’s Win 98 and above, but for some strange reason it’s not listed on the start menu of XP. Otherwise it should be included in the start menu of earlier Win OS’s.
To start Netmeeting in XP:
- Run… > conf.exe
To find your IP address:
- Run… > cmd.exe > ipconfig

Memberwebcam chats seem to be slow when either of the chatters is on dial-up, if that’s the case, then there’s little you can do but switch programs (yahoo seems to have less problems with this), or get broadband internet (cable or DSL).

KeymasterThank-you, Roland. I was going to say the same thing. Broadband is pretty much essential for decent quality A/V.
Eicats, what kind of connection do you and your friend have anyway?
Anna, have you found better results using NetMeeting? I’ve found MSN Messenger’s A/V to work really well, and certainly much easier than NetMeeting.

KeymasterNetMeeting? Yeah, if you’re on XP. Just follow the instructions Anna gave above to launch it.

Memberi tried netmeeting, and i still have the same problems- its not great quality. its fuzzy and jerky, and the sound is worse than msn messenger. plus something is wrong with my computer and it completly shut down in the middle of the conversation. it went to a blue screen that said it shut down to avoid damage to my computer. agh. computers hate me.

ParticipantThe quality of webcam quality would be almost entirely dependant on the actual webcams being used, good webcam = good picture. I’ve never experienced any of the above mentioned when in a Netmeeting call using a good quality webcam.
As far as voice goes, again it’s dependant on the mics being used and Internet connections (but DSL shouldn’t be a problem).
Quote:quote:plus something is wrong with my computerThen you ought to fix it, upgrade it. I may be way off, but it sounds like you’ve got a slightly outdated system, which in the long run also contributes to whether Netmeeting runs smoothly or not.

Memberupgrade to what? my computer isn’t even a month old. i shouldn’t be having these problems. could i have a virus? i’m scanning my system right now.

ParticipantJust because it’s new, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the newest fastest thing on the market, especially if it was pre-built and store-sold.
Prove me wrong.
October 5, 2003 at 3:37 am #89722eicats
Memberbut its not prebuilt or store sold.
what can i upgrade to? how come msn messenger webcam conversations seem to work fine for everyone else??October 5, 2003 at 3:40 am #89709Anna
ParticipantLike I said, it depends on the webcams and mics being used. What webcams and mics are you and your friend using?
