MemberJust a few questions that might clear things up and get you closer to a solution:
Does it not work for you, but does the person on the other end get to see you, or does the cam feature not work at all?
Is this with all contacts you’ve attempted to start your webcam with, or only with one contact?
Can you view other people’s webcams?
Which webcam (brand & model) are you using, and have you installed the latest drivers for that cam?
Are you using the latest MSN Messenger version?
Do you have a firewall and/or router installed?
Can you use voice chat without problems?January 2, 2004 at 4:13 am #86752ruffdawg

MemberI also cannot get my logitech orbit webcam to work with MSN messenger. when I “start my webcam”, nothing happens. I think it is a firewall problem, but I don’t know how to fix it so I can send it out. I have a cable modem…do I need to call the cable co? What about Norton Internet Security, do I have to turn that off while I am messaging?
Thx,

MemberRuff Dawg, unfortunately the StyleCam Delux pages on the SiPix site don’t say anything about the cam working with MSN Messenger. Only netmeeting is mentioned, but that’s not what we’re looking for.
It’s possible that that webcam isn’t supported by MSN Messenger. Contacting MSN Messenger support directly to see if they can shed some light on possible compatibility issues seems to be your best bet.miccikoz, that webcam should work just fine, as it’s the latest model and Logitech pretty much made the webcam feature in MSN Messenger 6. You did run the Audio/Video Tuning Wizard and got the cam working there just fine, right?
I don’t think your cable company probably will be able to help you much. One thing you could do is find someone to try and start a webcam chat with, then disable your firewall, try to start the webcam convo. If it works, you know the problem lies with the firewall. If it doesn’t work, you’ll know that you have to search for the problem & solution elsewhere.
If it does turn out to be your firewall that’s causing the problem, turn the webcam off and the firewall back on a.s.a.p. to prevent possible problems as a result from your computer being unprotected for a certain amount of time. Post back here to share the results so we (probably someone other than me) can try to help you get a step closer to getting your problem solved.February 13, 2004 at 1:25 am #86756kenhcwoo

MemberWEBCAM FIXES
Firstly, make sure you’ve gone through the Audio (and Video) Tuning Wizard in Messenger.
To do so, open the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then Audio Tuning Wizard,
then go through the wizard to select and test your audio/video devices. If you are using type of third-party firewall (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc.)
make sure that in the Firewall program’s settings that Messenger is set to
“Permit All”, “Allow All” or “Medium”(GIVE MSN MESSENGER FULL ACCESS)If your on WINDOWS XP and are using a router (with UPnP support), you may need to remove the current port forwardings.
To do so, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections.
Right-click the “Internet Gateway” (should be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties.
Choose the Settings button, click each ‘msmsgs’ or ‘msnmsgr’ entry and then choose ‘Delete’ to each one.
close Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.Turn off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so, click Start, then click the Control Panel.
If you’re in category view click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections.
Right click your network/internet connection, then click Properties.
Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try again.February 17, 2004 at 3:37 am #86757tanaoa
MemberIm using a Intel webcam, it used to work on MSN but when i went to use it today it would not display anything but a black screen.
There is no firewall, no zonealarm, no router.
Anyone know what else could be causing this problem ?February 24, 2004 at 2:26 am #86758L_e_X
MemberOk .I have a similar problem. I use a ATI TV tuner with a camcorder. I use the Tuning Wizard and my cam come up with no problem. But when I got to Web Camera Settings it say MSN Messenger cannot detect a camera. It works fine with Paltalk, and Yahoo. I use to have a crappy Creative Webcam and I’m wondering if it still thinks its there. Help Please

MemberSimple answer. Some cams do not work in MSN Messenger becuase Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to only used “approved” hardware in MSN. Approved means any company that have paid Microsoft a huge wad of money in order for their stuff to be compatible with MSN.
Just go into your registry and insert the word Logitech into the driver description somewhere, it will then work cos MSN “approves” logitech stuff.

MemberI’ve had many cam problems that seems to resolved them self on a random basis lol.
Strange as it may seem, I actually choose “No webcam” in audio/video tuning wizard, cam works fine then. Other times I have to switch usb slot for it to work. You can also try do action | start video conference, some cams work there, but not in regular mode.
If you try video conference you might have to select cam in audio/turning wizard again.
Makes sense huh? I thought not…well it works for me lol
I have a 3com homeconnect cam.X

MemberI have, better my contacts, have the same problem too.
My cousin in the Netherlands and my wifes relatives in Istanbul have all the same problems. They use the wizard, have picture and when at the moment supreme: black sceen. At least that is what I get !NL: is using a trust Spy@cam 100 webcam, Turkey is using a Creative webcam (dont know which version).
See some references to registry.
Is there any solution that works always?I downloaded 6.1.0.211 today (beta?) but was not able to try as all others where offline.
I have seen another friend with my PC so it is able to work.
PS: Also audio doesn’t work with all. But seems a common problem with MSN. Maybe Yahoo is the solution???
Thanks in advance for any help !

MemberI had the same problem with my Creative Webcam. It worked with various other applications, but not MSN. It showed a picture during the Audio/Video Tuning Wizard, but when I go to Tools & Web Camera Settings, the picture is just black & it’s the same if I try to use it in MSN.
I uninstalled all of the applications that came with the camera – PC Cam Center, Webcam Monitor & also the driver, rebooted the PC & then re-installed the previously removed apps. again.
Now the camera works fine in MSN. -
