hi all,
i’m a guy from south africa and allowed a woman also from south africa to view me on webcam. She wanted to see … so i bared all (idiot i am!). Now she says she has a deal with a tv show … and has recorded me, claiming that i will apear on national tv, unless i pay her a sum of money! Obviously this is very upsetting! Irrespective of whether she can legally do so, the main question is: Can a webcam recording be viewed on television? Will the resolution and quality not be so poor that would make it virtually impossible, particularly if the webcam is a lower-end webcam?

I have to wonder why a national TV station would want to show such a thing. In my opinion, I think she is just trying to get money out of you.

Tell her to “go for it.” Once its shown, you can sue the show and make tons of money! She’s full of it!

Simply tell her you don’t plan to give her any money and if she chooses to show it on television, tell her you will sue her for not having your consent. And next time be sure to be more careful to who you decide to “bare it all” for. There is lots of sick people out there and you happened to meet one of them. Good luck with that, but i would think its a huge lie to get money just as Martin said, because not most television shows broadcast webcam footage of naked people.

But you are correct, the resolution will be very poor and it would be very unlikely that you’d be very recognizable in a wide angle shot, especially with a lower-end webcam, however any close up shots of your face would likely be discernable, even on TV.I’m not sure about South Africa’s laws regarding the use of video footage without consent, but I find it unlikely she would be able to convince a TV station to show your video on TV without any permission. The most she could possibly do is show it with your face blurred out, and depending on your country’s laws regarding explicit content, the private parts would have to be blurred as well. All in all, I would say she is simply trying to scare you into paying her. Put this woman on your ignore list and do not correspond with her anymore and I’m sure your problem will simply disappear.
Of course if your truly concerned, call up a lawyer and see exactly what the law allows for things of this nature. And you could always flip things around and charge her for blackmail instead. Everyone makes mistakes, you learn and life goes on. Don’t give in to this womans scam.
March 5, 2005 at 3:52 pm #116097-bAbY_meX-ParticipantWhy would a national TV station be interested in showing webcam footages of naked people? Seriously, this woman is just scamming and blackmailing you into giving her money. And if ever she would really do what she said, you could just sue her. TV stations also censor the face and private parts of a naked individual about to be shown on tv.

This is funny. Why would you bare all to someone you don’t even know? The only person I would ever bare all to is a woman who I am in love with (relationship). Sorry to say this, but: I do think it is sick for this girl to blackmail you and say she will give the recording to a tv show, but isn’t it also sick to be showing your whole body to someone you don’t even know? I read that and it was kind of funny 😀
Also, don’t worry about her little threat. She can’t do anything. Normally people don’t have the knowledge and software to record webcam and I don’t think she can do anything. Also, even if you did give her money, if she could, she would probably still give the clip to them to put it up. But I’m thinking, why would a tv station put a clip up of a nude person that is not even known to the world? Maybe if it was a politician or famous person, I could understand. But you don’t have to worry about a thing. For one, she probably doesn’t have the software or expertise to record it. Two, it will be bad quality, and three, the tv station won’t waste their time because it would probably only get many ratings if it was done to a famous person and since you are not famous, most probably wouldn’t pay attention to it. Also, you could always use leverage and say you could sue so she would be too scared to try anything.
