I already asked about software in topic?ID=5 (Rob’s post about his Logitech QuickCam) but decided not to wait and go to tucows.com.
There I found these two freeware programs and I’d like to know if anyone has heard of them or has ever used them:Name: NOWencoder Beta 2.4
Type: Freeware
Works on: Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 and ME
Rating: 5 cows
Developer site: http://www.nowonair.com/Name: visionGS PE 1.21
Type: Freeware
Works on: Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 and ME
Rating: 5 cows
Developer site: http://www.visiongs.de/I download both files but still I’d like to know which one might be better.
Thanks,
RolandMarch 5, 2002 at 9:06 pm #102600FrutZleMemberWell, a quick update: I just gave visionGS PE 1.21 a try, but it won’t work for me. It won’t upload the images (haven’t tested streaming media as I couldn’t get the upload to work) and the help files are not clear to me.
I wanted to test NOWencoder, but after installing I immediately got the message that my licence is expired and I should go download the latest version. Not exactly the right way to get people to use your software.
On another note: on their site, none of the demo webcams seemed to work. It’s nice to have a chat with it (at least that’s what I think you get), but if the cams don’t work…. lolTime to search for other software.

March 5, 2002 at 9:21 pm #102596FanaticMemberI don’t have experience with either of those. NOWencoder looks like another Spotlife or WebcamNow site (you can’t integrate on your web site). VisionGS is a commercial app, and there’s not a lot of documentation for it. Looks like a one-man project.
Of course, you could use Windows Media Encoder for free. That can be embedded in any web page.

March 5, 2002 at 11:23 pm #102599FrutZleMemberI downloaded that CoffeeCup WebCam software’s trial version. The image is just too small to see anything so I uninstalled it right away.
Decided to give visionGS PE 1.21 another try and hot-diddley-dang, it worked. It seems that with a 20-second image upload the FTP server can’t handle it and crashes or something so now the cam is down again . I’ll put it to a 2 minute refresh and see what happens then.
I’ll look into the WME too. Thanks.

The option is somewhat buried though: Image Settings > Device > Video Display.
Of course, the higher the resolution and the more frequent you update… well you know.

BigBlueBall.comMarch 6, 2002 at 4:33 pm #102598FrutZleMemberRight now I’m using visionGS which is completely free and does offer what I want right now. I’ve also found Webcam32 by Surveyor (http://www.surveyor.com) which is, again, paid software.
The only problem I have is that the FTP server doesn’t always seem to be able to handle the uploading of the new images even with a 3 minute refresh
Oh, one thing I find very useful about visionGS is that when I close the program, it uploads one last image which will show until the program is started again (telling people that the cam is offline).
March 6, 2002 at 10:20 pm #102594Jeff HesterKeymasterHey Roland! What’s the URL to your webcam? I’d like to check it out.
As for the FTP issues, CoffeeCup webcam FTPs the images to my web server every 60 seconds. It usually works fine, even over dial-up, though now I’ve got DSL at home so it goes much faster.

BigBlueBall.comMarch 8, 2002 at 2:59 pm #102597FrutZleMemberJeff, it’s on my site: http://www.frutzle.com in the menu as “The WebCam. I made it a pop-up so I wouldn’t have to make an entire page for it.
Also, I’m using the server space I got from my ISP for the webcam. Haven’t had any problems the last two days but it’s probably server congestion when I can’t FTP the images because a lot of personal websites are put on that server
The cam is on pretty much all day long and pointed outside (ohhh another traffic cam ) , but in the evenings I usually turn it off for my site and put it online on Yahoo.

March 8, 2002 at 11:00 pm #102593Jeff HesterKeymasterCool! Looks like the midwest here in the US (where I grew up).
I’ve thought of setting up a cam with an outside view, but I’m not close enough to a window at work, and my window here at home has no view! Maybe when I get my other laptop working, I’ll set one up upstairs….

BigBlueBall.comMay 23, 2002 at 11:12 pm #102601caulinMemberThe current version of the NOWencoder at http://www.nowonair.com should not present you with a beta license expiration message at present.
Those people broadcasting that appear to have video may well be behind a firewall where our rebroadcasting server cannot get to them. Using Microsoft’s Windows Media Encoder may be free (as is NOWonair currently) but you will be pulling bandwidth for every viewer directly over your own connection, i.e. more than one viewer is impractical using a modem. NOWonair uses Windows Media servers to redistribute the stream.
NOWonair will likely undergo an update in the future which may include a new version that makes it possible for many to broadcast from behind a firewall. Providing services for similar turnkey broadcast from a broadcaster’s own website are also being considered.
