Banks are changing.
The concept of visiting a brick-and-mortar bank to make deposits and withdrawals was replaced with the ATM, and that’s being replaced yet again by digital banks.
My daughter asked me what bank I would recommend, with low/no fees, easy access to money, easy deposits, and maybe even some cool tech.
My answer? Simple.
Simple is an online-only bank. You can deposit checks using your iPhone (snap a pic). You get a card that can be used at pretty much any ATM, and they allow fee-free withdrawals at ATMs with the StarSF logo.
But the app that they provide really shines. It categorizes your spending so you can get a handle on where your money is going (much like Mint), and allows you to squirrel away money for specific goals (saving for a vacation, for example). What remains is your “Safe to Spend” balance, which (conveniently) does NOT include the money you’ve already put aside for those big goals.
