MemberI use AVG anti spyware and defrag and scan disk weekly. I found that doing them this often makes the process a lot quicker. I also have a cleanup program that with a push of a single button it removes all temp files and dumps cookies on a daily bases. i have had my computer for 9 years and still runs like the day i bought it. plus ASDL doesnt hurt for speed either.

MemberPersonally, just a hardware firewall. Nothing else. No sites have ever bothered me, no viruses, no adware, no slowdowns. Kinda makes me wonder what it is that makes other people have these problems so frequently.

ParticipantThe only thing I have open 24/7 is a firewall. Other than that I have a virus scanner (Nod32) and the multiple spyware/adware tools, but I can’t remember the last time I ran any of them. I do occasionally defrag with Diskeeper.

KeymasterI’m actually a big fan of Windows OneCare Live. It provides all of the features listed above, and makes it really easy to automate the entire process. It’s reasonably priced, especially if you have multiple computers (one license is good for up to 3 PCs). And there is a free 90-day trial.

MemberAh, but why pay for something when you can get its equivalent for free? (Besides, it’s from Microsoft… eww…) :p

ParticipantSince switching away from Windows, my computer has been bug free without the slowdown of extra scanners 🙂
That option isn’t for everybody, but I’m not a gamer, so it worked for me.

(Besides, it’s from Microsoft… eww…) :pI’ll let you in on a little secret — I actually LIKE a lot of Microsoft products. I like Windows XP, Windows Media Player, Outlook, and Visual Studio. I like their server products, too.
And as a former Norton user, I’m much happier with Windows OneCare.
Yeah, there are free products to do most of that, but for me, it’s worth the convenience to have a single package that covers all the bases, and does so for three of my home PCs.
