I do an antivirus once a week, but it’s on all the time, and quite often it does pop up saying it’s stopped this or that.
I once got a virus on my computer, and it cost me fortune, and I lost all my music and photo’s.
Now I have Norton on, my feeling is better safe than sorry.
I use ZoneAlarm for my firewall, Ad-Aware for Anti-Spy/Adware, and avast! for my anti-virus after AVG (up to date and all) let a virus through and wiped out my computer.
AVG for antivirus, Ad-Aware, and for firewall.. none really other than the XP SP2 firewall. I also do weekly scandiscs and defragments.
And at Run > Msconfig I select to run at startup only the programs I need, and that’s helped to speed up things a bit.
Ah, while you mention Msconfig, let me advert this very awesome little program called “StartupCPL”. It’s a very small download, and installs itself right in to your Control Panel (called “Startup”). There, you can view what exactly is starting up, and from where (Registry, Start menu, etc). I use it all the time, it’s very simple and very powerful. Download it now.
