How about sending this poll out via email? I haven’t seen the BBB bulletin grace my inbox in ages? Maybe that would stir up some interest?
November 28, 2007 at 6:40 pm #165116HasanMemberYou can have a page that lists all the official clients of major IM networks along a table of supported features and an official BBB rating for that client
Then a list of interoperable clients along with the list of supported features and IM networks and ofcourse a BBB
Then a list of alternate clients with the same set of info
A critical review of each client by BBB staff and links to official websites would be great
To make it more interactive, you can allow users to comment on each client
Addressing Social Networking sites is also an interesting area to expand in for the forums and the site as whole.

Wonderful ideas there!
More competitions would be good too, we used to do them and the response was amazing.

All of that less the subjective ratings is available here:

December 3, 2007 at 4:11 am #165133ahoierParticipantSocial networking would be a good addition since IM and social networking are so closely related…
I mean, look at AIM/AIMPages….they are so similar, yet so different; well, it’s really just AOL trying to make a myspace clone out of AIM user profiles, but w/e 🙂 hehehe.
Maybe discussions on “cool uses” for social networking – for example, cover various bots suited for different needs, etc. URLTea is a shor-URL service that even offers their service over Google talk for example.
December 3, 2007 at 4:29 pm #165132imported_ScorpMemberHi ~ I do apologize for my lack of attention to BBB and not being a very good member. The suggestion of sending this poll out in an email was a great idea. I might have missed it otherwise. Got so busy helping users elsewhere with some of Yahoo’s other products, as well as a couple other socialization websites. I get too curious for my own good sometimes and check out stuff, like MySpace, Multiply, 360 etc, and helped where I could with them. Which is the way I voted, to possibly add a bit more socialization help.
I do realize that to keep control of BBB and not have it get chaotic, you will have to limit or watch what you offer help in, unless you offer a link to a BBB2 site for some of the other things you offered in your poll and keep this one as it was intended, depending upon which way you chose to go with the results.
I did wonder if the reason that there are so many members that haven’t posted or posted very little is maybe they need help in other ways, rather than mostly IM issues ??
Thanks for the email.

My point is: just because people might want to discuss things other than IM won’t prevent them from posting in BBB if they do in fact want to discuss IM, especially in the cases where people have already found the site and taken the time to register.
However, I think that there may be some value in expanding discussions to topics tangential to IM (like other forms of online socialization). Such topics would likely appeal to most of the present and past BBB posters, giving us more to post about and help people with. It seems like lack of new topics is what Philip is worried about and the reason for this poll.
Off the top of my head here are other forms of online socialization I can think of:
1. Chat Rooms (like userplane)
2. Forums (like BBB :p)
3. Weblogs (like xanga)
4. Social Networking Sites (like facebook)
5. Feeds (like twitter)
6. News (like digg)
7. Games (like WoW)
8. Internet Relay Chat
9. Newsgroups
10. Pictures (like flickr)
11. Videos (like youtube)Feel free to list more that I’ve left out 🙂
