Since it’s a holiday weekend in the states and I’ve got an extra day off, I’m looking for movie recommendations. I saw Sweeney Todd last weekend and loved it, and will see it again for sure; but what now?

Heh. Sorry about the caps…. but Cloverfield is out in theatres today, and I’ve been waiting for this day since July.
January 18, 2008 at 3:18 pm #166181PhilipModeratorI am most definitely going to watch Cloverfield…the trailer really whetted my appetite.
January 19, 2008 at 12:13 am #166177MrOatsMember*cough* Cloverfield. *cough* 🙂
Tell us how it is if you see it! 😉
January 19, 2008 at 12:49 am #166182PhilipModeratorI’ve watched No Country for Old Men, but the ending was, in a word, different. Not the typical good guys win scenario. The actor who portrays the killer is pretty good, but Tommy Lee Jones as the sheriff is pretty much wasted in the role, he’s just ramblin’, little action going on.
7.5/10
January 19, 2008 at 1:57 am #166173Jeff HesterKeymasterI’m planning to see Sweeney Todd tomorrow night, but I agree that Cloverfield looks interesting. Since you’ve seen Sweeney Todd, I’d probably suggest that, or any one of the potential “best picture” candidates.
January 19, 2008 at 3:13 am #166174TigerbladeParticipantCloverfield – just got back from seeing it, and i’m still a bit nauseous. Non-stop shaky camera. REALLY good movie, but… take a dramamine or something before you go.
I won’t give anything away, but there are some parts where you’ll wish you could just close your eyes until it stops moving. except it… doesn’t stop moving. ever.
definitely one of those movies where you dont get the full effect unless you’re seeing it on a giant movie screen, but where you wouldn’t want to see it on a giant movie screen a second time. unless you like being woozy.

January 19, 2008 at 4:37 pm #166179PolarBearNPRParticipantOh – that was a good one too, and no, decapitations don’t bother me as long as it’s part of the story and not just gratuitous gore. Other pairings between Depp & Burton are Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, The Corpse Bride (animated, of course), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. And I agree with the statement, which I don’t think means they should marry as life-partners, but theirs is a definite cooperative partnership that brings out the best in both – which is what marriage is all about.
January 19, 2008 at 8:47 pm #166180PolarBearNPRParticipantOK . . . so I tried to talk my friend into seeing Cloverfield but she didn’t want to, but her husband said he might go with me. Well, after some more discussion, we decided that all of us would go and take the kids to see National Treasure, Book of Secrets. A thoroughly enjoyable movie for a Saturday afternoon; exactly as expected; good adventure stuff there.
But I still have two more days . . . and actually, after reading your nausea report as well as those of others . . . I’m thinking Cloverfield on the big screen may not be for me as even simple games affect my senses (of motion and such). So I think I’ll wait til that’s on DVD or pay per view and watch it on the smaller screen at home because it looks really good.
And Jeff – you’re gonna love Sweeney Todd.

Glad you liked it, I have to wait until 1 Feb for it’s release over here, but thanks for letting me know it will be worth the wait.
January 20, 2008 at 11:21 pm #166178YahooliganMemberI saw Atonement last night, but would not recommend it. It’s supposed to be good, and it had it’s moments, but I didn’t really feel anything for the characters.

January 30, 2008 at 2:46 am #166185PhilipModeratorWell, I’ve finally seen Sweeney Todd, and must say that the Depp/Burton partnership still retains its magic. With just 3 months of intensive singing lessons, I am pretty much awed by Depp’s and Bonham Carter’s ability to sing and act at the same time. Highly recommended.
10/10 for me!
