MemberIn the new AIM beta what’s the port that the video uses? If it complains about a firewall, Does that mean that I might need to foward the ports on my router? This seems to be the only problem with AIM. Ideas? Thanks and if possible do you think that you could give me a hand if by IMing me at “LikeMercury2Hell” Thanks in advance.

If you block any outgoing TCP/IP connections to *.yahoo.com on port 5050, then Yahoo shouldn’t be able to log on. Or maybe it just picks another server/port then? 🙂

MemberYup.. port 5050 is the port it connects to on the yahoo servers (*.yahoo.com or whatever it is). Yahoo uses a range of ports to connect out to from your computer when signing on. I tested it and it seemed to be using between port 1110 and 1119 on my computer… this could be completly random based on your computer, Im not sure exactly what ports it does use.

Actually, computer programs generally do not (and can not) determine what port to use for outgoing connections. Outgoing ports have a random number that is decided, assigned and handled by the operating system.

MemberTo go even further into the subject of the particulars of ports that DJ previously explained, when a program on your computer connects to a port (say 80 for HTTP) it connects to that port on the Host computer (the HTTP Server), or the computer that you are connecting to. The port used on your computer to connect to the recieving computer is a random port (like DJ said) above port 1023. So the range of possible ports used on the client is from port 1024-65536.

MemberZlink u made me really confused.
I have blocked all ranges of ports that were given above, and yet yahoo still works like a charm……..how do i bring that bastard program down in my d-link di-604 firewall/router.
Do i wanna do this in the firewall tab (i assume) or the Filters tab.
