On Saturday night, I was browsing Amazon and studying up on DJ equipment when I decided to buy the Gemini CDM-3600 Dual CD Mixing Console:
I realize that there are several software options out there for playing and mixing/remixing music on your computer, but it’s just not the same with a keyboard and a mouse. It is definitely more practical to have an external piece of hardware such as a MIDI controller, but even then… meh.
Obviously what’s enjoyable about a piece of equipment like this is that I can scratch, alter the knobs and dials, and do basically anything I want with both my hands on my own free will. I’m looking forward to being able to carry it around with me and use it at small parties with my friends, or just simple bedroom DJing and practicing.
Gemini also has a model that allows you mix MP3s straight from USB flash devices, but alas… it’s just not as cool when you don’t have some kind of spinning medium involved. (That, and it’s more expensive anyway.) I realize that Gemini isn’t necessarily the best manufacturer out there, but I think their products fit my needs quite well. They specialize in “all-in-one” machines with multiple CD players and mixers built into a single unit (stuff that a beginner DJ would have an easier time with). Either way, from what I’ve seen on youtube and various review sites, this particular product seems to be considerably popular right now and it appears to be very well-built. I was also able to nab it at a decent price.
So, the next thing for me to think about is exactly what I’m going to do/create with it. When I get it, I’m gonna try to create some basic techno loops and samples while mixing in some different music and vocals from artists like, say, Enya. (Yeah… maybe I can create a decent enya techno remix). Then there’s also the skill of beat-matching and being able to mix from one song into another.
I realize that BigBlueBall isn’t exactly a professional DJ forum, but if anyone has any tips or ideas relevant to my new toy, then shoot. I’m interested in hearing your comments.
