Hard to believe that 2002 has come and gone so quickly.
In your opinion, what was the biggest news in the instant messaging world in the past year, and why?
Was it the introduction of the Yahoo webcam? Trillian Pro? Y!Tunnel? What do you think made the most impact?
AOL giving up on the cat and mouse game it played while blocking attempts toward interoperability IE Trillian , Odigo, Jabber et all.
In a world of free IM I saw Trillian pro as just another yawn, when given the oportunity to see it working… I agree, YAWN.
Any webcam additions to existing IM packages is good news, tho backward compatibility is quite important.
Yup, for me the AOL retreat was their greatest contribution to IM in 2002.
WHY? well it gave Trillian a chance to increase its footprint in IM and to release a ‘for profit’ version, it helped Jabber gain a share of the IM alternate interoperable world, its just a shame Odigo never saw a need (or never had the skill) to advance in any area. Several other players entered this gray interoperable arena and its good to see them. A business group is now puting the screws on AOL to ‘make interoperability happen’ or suffer a walkout from corporate users. Its about time.
We live in interesting times.:)
