Can someone advise me on which messenger to use?
I have Yahoo, AIM, MSN, ICQ and GT, so it’s much easier when only one IM program is running instead of five. I’m using Gaim, but I don’t really like the way it does some things…August 30, 2005 at 8:08 pm #129130SpikeMemberTrillian. You can install a Jabber plugin if you have pro, as well, which will get you on GT, although I just use Trillian + GT, anyway. :p But, yeah, Trillian by far.
August 30, 2005 at 9:51 pm #129129AwesomeSauceParticipantI second Spike. Right now, Trillian is my favorite, though my only complaints are that it’s kind of slow and clunky for me. There are two versions of Trillian: Trillian Basic (Free) and Trillian Pro ($25). Of course, Trillian pro has more features. You can check it out at Trillian.cc.
If you want something simple and light-weight, I suggest Miranda, which is also free. It’s a fast, simple instant messenger that supports all the major networks and there are tons of plugins you can download for it.
There is also Gaim (free). It’s for Linux, but there is also a version for Windows. It’s pretty nice, but I found it a little hard to get used too.
There are several others out there, I suggest you search on Google for others and see what you think.
August 30, 2005 at 10:10 pm #129135LinuxAddictMemberI prefer Gaim to Trillian but I have Trillian setup the way I like it. And like everyone else said it can have a Jabber plugin added if you buy pro. Gaim is the best for you if you don’t want to spend any money.

The default Trillian skin is nice, even though the other skins and the skinning engine itself may be a bit confusing and you need to buy Trillian Pro ($20) to use most of the ones I’d use, if I could.
Anyway BBB has a section for Trillian, so look around there and check to see if you like what you see!

August 31, 2005 at 5:33 am #129133Lord_SetuweathMemberI used Trillian for a couple of years actually, and I guess I like it, but it doesn’t have Jabber… Gaim, on the other hand, does…
P.S. I don’t really want to pay, so Trillian Pro isn’t for me
August 31, 2005 at 4:11 pm #129134Lord_SetuweathMemberJust tried Miranda and didn’t like it very much…
I guess I’ll just stick to Gaim and Trillian. Haven’t found anything better yet.August 31, 2005 at 7:39 pm #129132KudoParticipantif you like jabber that much they are a lot of jabber clients and most of them connect to all major IM (Yahoo,MSN,ICQ & MSN) check them Here
August 31, 2005 at 9:57 pm #129128Jeff HesterKeymasteranother great gaim feature is that it can run on multiple operating systems. so once you do get used to it… you won’t need to get used to some random Operating System’s default IM client (Trillian can only run on Windows). if a specific protocol changes the way it works, gaim will most likely be fixed faster than Trillian (because of it’s openness).
miranda is also a great client to use if you are in a restricted place (like school). bring it on a floppy or thumb drive and it should work. 🙂
